PATENT OFFICE.
EUBQN 0. NICHOLS, 0F LOWELL, INDIANA.
SAW BOW.
Application led October 22, 1923.
To all whom it lmay concern Be it known that I, HURoN O. NICHOLS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lowell, in the county of Lake and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw Bows, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to bows of the type used in connection with musical instruments.
It is known that music can be produced on a flat piece of spring metal, for example, on a common steel saw, by bowing it on its smooth edge. The pitch of the notes is varied by bending the saw blade to a greater' or less degree, depending upon the pitch of the note desired.
It is possible to accomplish this with an ordinary violin bow, but certain difiiculties are encountered which it is the object of the present invention to eliminate. For example, it is impossible to produce a sufficiently high degree of tension on the horse hairs to produce entirely satisfactory tones on a saw when the known varieties of violin bows are used for this purpose.
It is accordingly an object of the present invention to provide a bow for steel saws or other similar objects, which is constructed to maintain a sufficient tension on the horse hairs.
Another difficulty encountered when a violin bow is used on a saw is that in View of the pressure that may become necessary, a violin bow will not afford a sufficient hand grip to enable the operator to produce the necessary tension.
It is accordingly a further object of the present invention to provide a bow for steel saws and other similar objects which will afford thc operator a sufficient hand grip to produce any degree of pressure that may become necessary.
Still further objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with Serial No. 670,068.
the accompanying dra-wing which illustrates in side elevation a preferred embodiment of the invention.
Referring to the drawing, the reference numeral l indicates a piece of spring metal, such as steel, which may conveniently be round in cross section and which is bent to the shape indicated in the drawing.
shown, the bow consists of a single integral piece of springsteel bent to a substantially elongated U-shape having its end portions 2 and 3 in approximately parallel relation when under tension.
The handle or gripping portion 4. is formed of a loop provided in one of the arms of the U-shaped steel.
The usual horse hairs 5 may be stretched across and secured in the ends 6 and 7 of the steel in any convenient manner and in fixing the horse hairs in position the arms of the bow are brought toward each other and the horse hairs fixed therein while said arms are under tension. Then the horse hairs have been fixed in position they continue to hold the spring steel under tension.
By the foregoing construction there has been provided a bow for steel saws and similar devices which will maintain the necessary tension on the horse hairs to produce music efficiently upon a steel saw or other similar device; and there has also been provided such a bow having an ample gripping portion for the player or operator to enable him to bear down with as much pressure as may be necessary.
That is claimed is:
A bow for playing saws comprising a single integral piece of spring metal having approximately parallel end portions, one of said end portions having a loop handle formed therein, and horse hairs stretched across and secured in the ends of said parallel portions, said bow holding said hairs under tension.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
HU RON O. NICHOLS.
