DRAWINGl PRE-ss.
Application filed Ncvember 21, 41922. SerialI No. 602,470.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM KLocKr., a citizen of the United -States of Amerlca, re-
. s'idin in Woodhaven, Queens Connt\Y citv and State of New York, have invented certaln new and useful Improvements 1n a Drawing Press, of which the yfollowing is and obviating the use of pumps accumulators, and pipe and valve systems such as usually employed where Huid under pressure is employed for opposing the movement ot' a yieldable tool or forming part .of a press.
The invention further provides a press of the character mentionedv above in which the amount or intensity of the reaction may be regulated.
An embodiment of the invention is illns. trated in the accompanying drawing, 'in which-.-
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in sec-- tion, and
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view of the principal parts shown in Fig. 1, the line of Section being at right angles tothe plane of Fig. 1. I v
Referring to said drawings, numeral 10 designates the yieldingY forming part or tool, here embodied as the blank-holder of a drawing press. 12 designates the punch or male lforming part and 14 the die vorA female. forming part. The punch 10 is mounted upon a part of the frame 15 of the press, here shown as the bolster Aplate 16,
and the die 14 is mounted on the'plunger 2 0, driven for exampleby a crank-shaft 22. The punch 12 may serve to guide the `yielding forming -part or blank-holder 10,
. ,and it may be also guided and housed in a ox 24.
30 designates the vacuum means or device foriresisting the movement of said yieldable part 10.'V This rdevice 30 is conveniently in the foi-1n of a cylinder 32 having a plate or head 33 against which' said yielding part 10 bears through pins 35, passing through holes in the bolster plate 16, or other suitable means ofv connection. A piston 37 is located inside of the cylinder 32, and connected to `the bolster plate 16 of the framel 15 by means of a rod 39. The cylinder 32 is open to the atmos here at ythe rear of the piston 37, thro-ngi. openings 41, so that any movement of the cylinder32l is opposed by the pressure of the atmosphere on the head 43 of said cylinder, the movement4 of said cylinderl 32 producing a vacuum or partial vacuum therein between said piston 3 7 and the head 43.
The cylinder 32 andpiston 37 are preferably so arranged that the head 43 is close 'to thepiston, leaving substantially no space` between said piston and cylinder head v43, so that there is initially substantially no air or gas within the cylinder to exert a counteracting pressure tothe pressure of the aml ientair acting on the head'i43 of the cylindex'. .A spring 45, or other suitable means,
may be provided for pressing the head 43 i of the cylinder toward the piston 37 and normally .maintainingv it' in such position. The spring 45 is, however, preferably of such strength as not to appreciably modify the resistance offered byfthe pressure of the air to the movement ofV said cylinder 32.
Means may be provided for regulating the resistance offered by said vacuum means 30. These means may be in the form of a needle valve 50 controlling an opening 51 into thecylinder 32. Air admitted by the valve. 50 may be ejected through said openthe return movement of said cylinder 32 and the yielding member 10 connected thereto. 'Operationz The atmosphere or ambient air', at any given place, has a constant pres-` sure per unitof area.y Consequently, when vthe die 14 `presses, the margin of a blank ressure, moreover, will 'be constant throng out the Ing 51, or through a separate valve 57, on
movement of the cylinder 32, and of the yielding part 10. If less than full atmospheric pressure is -desired on the cylinder 32, the needle valve 50 may be opened to admit air Ato lexert a partial pressure tending to offset the full atmospheric pressure on the outside of the head 43.
On the return stroke -of the plunger 20, the continued pressure of the ambient air on the cylinder head 43, transmitted through the plate 33 and connections '35, causes the yielding/part or blank-holder 10 to follow the die 14, any air containe in said cylinder 32 compressed to atmospheric pressure being ejected through the opening 5l, or throu h the valve 57 where such a valve is provi ed by the action of spring 45, thus returning the parts to initial position.
The idea of invention may receive other embodiments than that therein specifically illustrated and described.
