Application filed May 1 2, 1924 '-Se'ria1 No.' 712,791.
To all whom it, may concern Be it known that I, BERT S'r. AMoUR, a citizen of the United States, residing at VVinooski, in the county of Chittenden and State of Vermont, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Washboards and Suction Cups, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to washboards, and contemplates the provision of a combined washboard and suction cup, means of which the device can be initially used in the capacity of a pounder to relieve the clothes of the major portion of dirt, after which the clothes can be rubbed over the board proper thereby thoroughly cleansing in quick order and with the minimum effort.
In carrying out the invention it is also my purpose to provide the opposed sides of the suction cup with roughened or corrugated surfaces so that when the device is used as a ounde-r, it not only sucks the water through the clothes, but also provides for a rubbing and cleaning action against the clothes. i
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detailed description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawings forming part of this application, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention. I
Figure 2 is'a vertical sectional view-therethrough.
Referring to the drawings in detail 10' represents the sides of the board, which of course project an appreciable distance beneath the lower edge of the board proper indicated at '11, in the formation of legs so that the board can be supported in a wash tub in the usual manner. The board 11 is also provided with'a corrugated or roughened surface 12 of any suitable construction.
It will also be noted that the side members' 10 project a slight distance above the upper I edge of this board and arranged between the upper extremities of the side members 10 is what I term a vacuum cup 13.
Thisi'cup'may beaconstructed from suitable material and may also vary in size and configuration without departing from the spirit of the invention, but the cup is preferably of V-shaped formation in cross section as clearly illustrated in Figure 2. The apex of the cup reposes upon the upper edge of the board, and is supported thereon by means of clips 14 carried by the end walls of the cup and arranged to straddle may be riveted or otherwise suitably secured to the side members as at 15. It will be noted that the opposed sides of the cup are roughened or corrugated as at 16, so that when the cup is used in the manner to be presently described, it will provide a rubbing action on the clothes in addition to sucking the water through the clothes in the manner accomplished by use of a pounder. It will be further noted that strips 17 are secured at opposite sides of the body of the board adjacent the apex of the V-shaped member, and assist the clips 14 in holding said member in place.
In practice the clothes are placed within the tub, which of course is partly filled with water, whereupon the wash board is inverted, and the cup 13'lowered into the tub. The legs of the board are then taken hold of so that the entire device can be used in a capacity of a pounder, during which operation the water is forced through the clothes in a manner to relieve the clothes of the major portion of the dirt contained therein, during which operation thecorrugated or roughened sides 16 of the cup provide for a rubbing action against the clothes. This fact materially hastens the cleaning of the clothes in a very effective manner. After the major portion of the dirt has been removed from the clothes, the board is righted within the tub, and the clothes are then subsequently rubbed over the surface 12 in theordinary well known manner. In this waythe clothes are thoroughly and quickly cleaned and it requires but very littleefi'ort and energy on part of the user. I
'Whileit is believed that from the foregoing description, the nature and advan tages of the invention will be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to what is herein shown and described, and that such changes the adjacent side members 10. These clips 7 may be resorted to when desired as fall Within the scope of What is claimed.
{1 claim:
A clothes Washing pounder comprising a body including spaced parallel side bars having its ends projecting beyond the body, and such ends serving as handles, a V- shaped in cross section member arranged between the opposite ends of the side bars and having its opposite faces corrugated, clips on the opposite ends of the V-shaped in cross section member and secured to the adjacent ends of the side bars, and strips secured to the opposite sides of the body and disposed upon opposite sides of the apex of the V-shaped member and serving with the clips to hold the V-sha-ped member in place. a
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
BERT ST. AMOUR.
