WASHING MACHINE.
Application led July 8,
To all wtomy t may concern.'
Be it known that ll, EDWARD J. Rarrs, a citizen of the United States, residlng at Phoenix, in the county of Maricopa and State of Arizona, have 'invented new and useful Improvements in Washing Machines, of which the following isL a specification.
In carrying out the present invention it is my purpose to provide a washing machine whereby clothes, linen, etc., may be thoroughly and eli'ectively washed, and which, after the washing operation, may be used as a wringer, so as to relieve clothes, linen, etc., of the water therein. g
lt is also my purpose to improve and simplify the general construction of washing machines and to provide a washing machine which will embrace the desired features of simplicity, efficiency and durability,I and which may be manufactured and marketed at small cost.
With the above recited objects in veiw, and others of a like nature, the invention resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in and falling within lthe scope of the appended claims.
ln the accompanying drawin s:
' Figure 1 is a view in front e evation of a washing machine constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is an end View of the same.
Figure 3w is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 4:.
Figure t is a sectional view on the line' Figure 5 is a sectional view through the machine showing the same as used for y wringing pur oses.
Figures 6, and S are detailed views of the invention.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, l-l designate vertical supports of appropriate construction mounted upon base members 2 and connected-together by means of a cross'bar- 3. On the upper ends of the standards l--l are bearings -l respectively.
rll"he receptacle or container of my improved washing machine is indicated as an entirety by the'reference character 5, and in accordance with my'invention this receptacle comprises a lower half or section 6 and an upper half or section 7. rllhe lower section embodies a bottom wall, side and end walls, while the yupper section embodies a top Wall and side and end walls., The lower 1922. Serial No. 573,56. 1
edges of the side and end walls of the upper section are formed with a tongue that tits into a groove in the corresponding edges of the side and end walls of the bottom section, as clearly illustrated in Figures 3 and 4f of "the drawings, so as to form a fluid tight joint between the sections. rlhe end walls of the bottom section 6 of the receptacle or container adjacent to the upper endsv thereof are formed with outwardly extending axially alining trunnions 8 that itinto the bearings 4, so that the container may be support'ed by the standards l and rotated about the trunnions, lone of the trunnions being provided with a crank handle 9 by means of which the receptacle may be revolved.
rlhe opposite'side walls of the lower section 6 of the receptaclefare formed with inclined guideways 10 arranged in pairs, the pairs of guideways on one side wall alining respectively with the guideways on the other side wall. 'lhe top side walls of the top section 7 are also equipped with pairs of guideways 11 inclined in a direction reverse to the inclination of the guideways 10 in the bottom section. rllhe pairs of guideways 1l on one side wall of the top section aline respectively with the guideways on the other side wall. Slidably mounted in each pair of v alining guideways isa washboard l2 formed with perforations l2 suitably spaced apart having y,the opposite faces roughened and the upper edges of the washboards in the lower section terminate flush with the upper edges of the side and end walls of such section, while the lower edges of the washboards in the top section terminate with the side walls of such section and lie in edge to edge contact with the washboards in the bottom section when the two sections are placed together, as clearly shown in Figures 3 and 4f of the drawings. These washboards, spaced apart as'just described, form pockets to receive the clothes, linen or other material to be washed, and below the washboards and the guideways .in the bottom section is a false bottom 13 perforated as at la, while at the upper ends of the washboards and guideways in the top section is a false top l5 perforated as at 16. Mounted in each pocket is a ytrough-like member 17 shown in perspective in Figure 7 of the drawings. These trough-like members open toward the bottom and top walls. respectively, of the sections 6 and 7 of the receptacle and are of less width than the pockets formed by the washboards,
. result th at exerted upon the so that as the receptacle is turned the troughlike elements may slide back and forth in the pockets, in order to insure the cleansing of the clothes.
The top and bottom sections of the container are hinged together upon one side by means of hinges 17u of appropriate construction and the other side of the receptacle is provided with a'keeper 18 on the top section and a latch member 19 on the bottom section, the latch member being engageable with the keeper to hold the sections in receptacle formation, as clearly shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings.
In practice, the bottom section is illed with soap and water or other washing compound to the desired level and clothes, linen, etc., placed in pockets formed bythe washboards. The top section is now swung onto the bottom section and latched thereto and the receptacle asl an entirety rotated about the trunnions bymeans of the handle. 1n the'rotation of the receptacle the washing compound is agitated elements slide with the clothes back and forth Within the pockets, while the washing compound thoroughly saturates the contents of the `receptacle and passes through the perforated falsebottom and false top-and also through the perforated washboards, with the the clothes or contents of the receptaclev are thoroughly cleansed. The washboards are held in their respective guides by means of wedge-like pins 19 'that pass through ,alining openings in the guides in the washboards. `When it is. desired to wring the clothes the water or washing compound is drained from the receptacle and the top section ren moved, but afterthe removal of the top section the washboards in the bottom section are also removed and the clothes placed upon the false bottom'. The perforated board 20 is then placed upon they clothes to be wrung, as illustrated in Figure 5 of the drawings, and over this perforated board 20 is placed `a top member 21 formed centrally with an upstanding fulcrum member 22. Secured lto one of the trunnions is one end of a hook element 23 and pivoted to the other end element isone end of al lever 24, the central' portion of which rests u on the fulcrum post 22.
The other end o the lever 24 is provided withv a handle 25 by which pressure may be top member 21 and the enabling the clothes to'be board 20, thereby the board 2O and the compressed between false bottom in the lower section, so that the contents of the bottom section may be relieved of the water.
I have entered into a detailed description of the construction and relative arrangement of parts embraced in the present and preof my' invention with a view to imparting a full, clear Mldexact un- ',ceptacle forme tions, trunnions,r on
and the trough-like.
