IMPROVEMENT IN WATCH-POCKETS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,600, dated October 6, 1874; application filed Y Juiy 9, 1814.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BEERI W. TUTTLE, ofA Galena, in the county of Jo Daviess and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Watch-Pocket; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact descriptionof the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specilication, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention; and Fig. 2, a section through line w fr, Fig. 1.

Similar letters of reference in the accompanying drawings denote the same parts.

This invention has for its object to provide for public use a Watch-pocket which shall be adapted to protect the watch it contains against lateral pressure, and thereby prevent breakage of the watch-crystal orinjury tothe internal mechanism of the watch. To this end it consists in the application of a concavoconvex metallic plate to each side of 'a watchpocket, said plates being arranged with their concave sides inward, and so located as to protect the watch on both sides, the concavoconvex metallic plates having a greater curvature than the back and front faces of the watch, and bearing only on the rim of the watch, so that all lateral pressure is borne by the rim or outer periphery of the watch, the central portions of the protecting-plates not being in contact with either face ofthe watch.

The plates are suitably inclosed in the fabric composing the pocket, all of which I will now proceed to describe.

In the drawings, A represents a watchpocket composed of cloth or other suitable material, made in any desired form. B B are metallic concave-convex plates attached to the sides of the pocket A, one of such plates being on each side, with its convex surface outward, as shown in Fig. 2. The plates B are of suitable size to protect a watch placedv in the pocket between them. The plates have a greater degree of curvature in cross-section than the sides of the watch, in order that they may bear against the latter only at its periphery; hence whatever pressure is exerted on the sides of the pocket from any cause will be sustained by the periphery of the watch instead of its sides.

The plates B may be attachedto the pocket in any convenient manner. I prefer to place them on the outer sides and secure them by sewing a piece of fabric to the pocket over each plate, thus producing an ornamental effect and entirely inclosing the plates, so that they cannot scratch or injure the surface of the Watch.

The device described is adapted to be placed in the pocket of a garment or in any convenient position, and constitutes an effectual safeguard against the breakage or injury of the watch. Y

I am aware that pocket Watch-safes have heretofore been employed to protect. watches placed therein from pickpockets, and which consist of a watch-case removably attached to the pocket by pins or equivalent devices, and consisting of two parts hinged together and kept normally closed by means of a spring or equivalent device, and surrounding the watch; and I therefore lay no claim to such inventions, as the object desired to be attained by them is entirely different from mine, which is intended to prevent injury to the watch from lateral pressure.

The construction of the watch-safes above disclaimed differs also materially from mine, their construction being much more complicated.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is As a new article of manufacture, a watchpocket provided with concavo-convex plates B B, applied to its sides, having greater curvature than the front and back faces of watches generally, so that any lateral pressure on the plates will be borne `by the periphery or rim of any watch said pocket may inclose, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
