G. e. HQWELL VENTILATING DEVICE Filed May 1'7. 1924 WITNESS; TTORNEY' INVENTDR Patented Sept. 29, 1925.
UNYITED STATES GLENN G. HOWELL, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
VENTILATING DEVICE.
Application filed May 17, 192.4. Serial No. 714,116.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, GLENN Gr. HOWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ventilating Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention contemplates the provision of a ventilator embodying means to promote the circulation of foul air to hasten its removal from the room within which the ventilator is arranged.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detailed description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawings forming part of this application, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and -wherein Figure 1 is a view partly in section showing one embodiment of the invention, wherein the ventilator is used in connection with a stove pipe.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary sectional view.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 3 of a modified construction.
Referring to the drawings in detail 10 represents a Ventilating pipe which is arranged horizontally along the ceiling of a room, and communicates with a flue or chimney 11. If desired the pipe 10 may be built within the ceiling as shown in Figure 1, but this particular arrangement is not an essential part of the invention. The forward end of the Ventilating pipe 10 is coupled with an elbow 12 from which depends a hood 13 shaped similar to electric light shades, although this hood may be of any ornamental design without departing from the spirit of the invention. In accordance with one embodiment of the invention, the ventilating pipe 10 also communicates with the upper end of a stove pipe 14, in which instance use is made of the draft through the pipe to draw the foul air from the room into the chimney or flue 11.
To assist or promote the circulation of the foul air and draw it in the direction of the hood 13, with a view of hastening the removal of this air from the room, I provide an electrically controlled means, which may be either of the construction shown in Figure 2 or in Figure 4. In Figure 2 this means consists of a plurality of electric light bulbs 15, supported by an electric fixture including a rod or shaft 16 which has its upper end threaded into the hub portion 17 of a spider, the arms 18 of which are secured to the upper end 19 of the hood, which end is designed to be slipped into the adjacent end of the elbow 12. Fastening elements 2() are utilized for the purpose of holding the hood 13 associated with the elbow 12, and also for holding the spider in position for use. As it is clearly shown in Figure 3 the fastening elements 20 are adapted to be threaded into the adjacent ends of the arms 18 of the spider. In this form of the invention, the heat from the electric lights tend to promote or force the circulation of the foul air through the hood 13 and into the exhaust or Ventilating pipe 10.
In Figure fl- I make use of an electric fan 21 which is wholly arranged within the hood 13, the fan. including a shaft 22 which has its upper end threaded into the hub 17 of the spider' above described. It will be noted that either the shaft 16 or the shaft 22 can be quickly and conveniently screwed into the spider, or separated therefrom, these parts being interchangeable so that either part can be used according to the desire of the owner. Of course when the electric light bulbs 15 are used, they serve to illuminate the room as well as to promote the circulation of the foul air. In either instance, the electric light bulbs 15 or the fan 21 can be controlled by means of a switch 23 supported by the hood 13.
Vhile it is believed that from the foregoing description, the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to what is herein shown and described, and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
Vhat I claim is:
In combination, a hood adapted to be suspended from a support, and including an annular portion projecting centrally therefrom, a spider including diametrically opposed arms terminally contacting the inner arranged Within the hood to promote circula- Surfaoe of said annular portion, fastening tion of foul air, and draw it into the direcelements adapted to be passed-through said tion of the hood, and said device including l0 portionk `and threaded into said `arms for a shaft threaded into said hub.
