EMERGENCY HEATER.
Application filed July 23, 1925. Serial No. 45,535.
My invention relates to the general class of emergency electric heaters which are usually bulky, unsightly, incommodious and unhandy, wherein I employ a small compact heater safely disposed, so that the tire hazard is reduced` to a minimum and heat or light may be simultaneously or independently instantly applied to the room by the turn of a switch, my novel device being screwed into the socket of any wall bracket, table or floor lamp, so as to complete any such bare Xture by making it immediately a ieating and lighting fixture and which has the appearance to the casual observer of an ordinary lighting fixture, since the heating element is disguised in such a manner that an entire house could be heated in ordinary weather by the disposition of a number et my novel devices throughout the different rooms and halls and in temperate climates no other means of heating would be required.
To the above ends, my invention consists of a novel and useful combination of a iue or chimney surrounding an electric light bulb and heating unit set in a twin socket and combined with la threaded extension having a swivel attachment, so that the device may be screwed in any position, into an ordinary electric bulb socket, my invention however, not being limited to a single electric bulb or heating unit, as I may employ a plurality of each or either in combination with one or more of the other, as is evident.
F or the purpose of illustrating my invention l have shown in the accompanying drawings forms thereof which are at present pieter-red by me, since they will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that .my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization oi these instrumentalities as herein shown and described.

Referring to the drawings l designates the cylinder or chimney which also acts as a shade and is supported at the bottom by brackets 2, and at the top by other brackets 3, which are held together by the bolt 4, said bolt being positioned so as to throw no line oit shadow on the cylinder l, which may be made of translucent qualities. The brackets 2 and 3 and the retaining bolt t are attached to acommon base 5, having two or more sockets 6, in which are screwed one or more electric light bulbs 7, of suitable candlepower and one or more heating elements 8, of suitable wattage to heat the rooms or halls where the devices are to be placed, a single light and a single heating element being shown in Figures l and 2.
The heating element 8, shown herewith, is applicable to any standard electric light bulk socket and has supporting arms 9, enclosing the same in any suitable manner which hold the element in an upright position when red-hot so that it will not touch other integral parts of the device.
The base 5 is designed with a pendant swivel screw plug 10, having a knurled portion 11, so that the completely detachable heating and lighting lamp iixture may be immediately installed in any position in any ordinary electric light bulb socket, and the various instrumentalities of my inveution can be variously arranged so that the device may be applied to either upright or inverted electric light bulb sockets.
The base 5 is further supplied with pull cord switches ory any other suitable switch mechanism 12 which ena-bles the user instantly to turnon the electricity supplying the heating unit or the electric light bulbs, so that the device is capable 01""ali'ording light and heat simultaneously or separately or independently as desired. Il th-e heating element 8 should be of such large capacity as to interferey with the functioning of the electric light bulb by the generation oit heat Within the cylinder, a cylinder of mica or other lire-proof material 13 may be placed around the heating` unit 8, or the electric light bulbs 7 or around both unit and bulbs as shown in Figures 3, 4, .5 and 6. lu Figures l and i2, have omitted said cylinder, but have shown the same in Figures 3 to o, as surrounding the heating element, and it will be obvious that such a cylinder as l5 can be readily applied to the lamps. ln Figures l and 2, l have shoivn a single lighting and heating element employed. ln Figures 3 and 4, l have shown a plurality ci lighting elements, and a single heating element positioned therebetween, the enclosing flue 'Orcasing l, being more elongated than in VFigure In Figure 5, I have shown the liuc l as .substantially triangular in cross section.
In Figure 6 the arrangementadmits ci an ornamental outer shade le of the shape of a truncated cone, supported by the arms 1G and a mica or glass cylinder lil around the heating unit 8. The lights 7 in Figure 5 are arranged in a pendent diverging position, with the central heating element above. It will be seen from the lor-egoing that it is possible to prepare ready tor erection by any unskilled person, an artistic heating and lighting lamp that can be readily installed on any ordinary electric Wall bracket or portable electric table or floor lighting fixture by merely screwing in the swiveled plug 10 and instantly light and heat maybe applied to any part otl a building Where such sockets have been placed and connected.
ln all the embodiments ot my invention the common base 5, serves as a support for both the lighting and heating elements, and for the rod ivhich ties tog-ether the upper and loiver brackets 2 and 3 or their equivalents, which support the outer shade.

Having thus described my invention, What .l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. in a detachable, heating, and lighting lamp, a vertical flue, a vertical heating unit and an electric light bulb positioned v1Within said liuc and so assembled as to give heat or light or both simultaneously or independn ently Within the said tlue, a base for said unit and bulb, and a plug pendent from said base.
2. ln a detachable heating and lighting lamp, a base member, a vertical flue supported therefrom, a plurality of electric light bulbs and a vertical heating unit also sup: ported from said base and controlled by pull switches so assembled as to give heat or light or both Within the said flue, and a plug pendent from said base.
3. In a detachable heating and lighting lamp, a base, a vertical flue supported thereon, a vertical heating unit and electric light bulbs also supported 'from said base and so assembled as to give heat or light or both Within said tlue, a longitudinally extending guard tor said heating clement, and a plug pendent tromsaid base,

In a device of the character stated, a base, a heating and lighting element supported therefrom, supporting arms for said heating element also Supported from said base, an outer shade enclosing said elements, a bracket common to said base and the lower portion of said shade, an upright rod supported on said base, and an upper bracket common to the upper end of Said rod and the top of said shade in combination with a pendent screw plug depending from said base having a knurled portion intermediate said plug and base.
