Patented Sept. 29,1925. 1
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
TENT STAKE.
Application fi1'ed February 27, 1923. Serial No. 621,514.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARIE KLEINHES- SELINK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Orange City, in the county of Sioux and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tent Stakes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention aims to provide an improved ground anchoring stake embodying certain novel features of construction and arrangement of part-s whereby it is adapted to be readily driven into the ground or removed therefrom by an upward pull and yet withstand hard lateral pulls without its displacement.
Furthermore, the invention consists in the production of a device of this class more particularly adapted as a tent stake, and which is comparatively inexpensive in production, yet thoroughly dependable and eflicient in operation.
With these and other objects and advantages in view, the invention, consisting in the construction, combination and novel arrangements of parts will be clearly understood from the following description, refer ence bein had to the accompanying drawings whic h form a part of this application and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout both views, of which,
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the preferred embodiment of my invention applied as a tent stake, and
Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the stake.
Referring, now, to the illustrations, the device consists preferably of an elongated, flat, metal strip formed with a stake proper, 3, having at its upper end a laterally extending arm, 4, disposed at an acute angle to the stake proper and having at its free end a depending, comparatively short arm, 5, disposed substantially in parallelism with the stake proper. The device is provided with a suitable engageable element to which the tent rope or other securing means may be secured. Said element preferably consists of a downwardly turned hook, 6, formed on the upper end of the stake proper, 3, and on the side thereof remote from the arm, 4.
In operation the stake is so driven as shown in Fig. 1 that both the stake proper and the arm, 5, are embedded in the ground and the arm, 4, rests upon the ground, in which position it is clear the said stake proper and arm, 5, are inclined at such an angle to withstand hard lateral strains in the direction of their declination. In Fig. 1 I have shown a tent rope, 7, as engaged with the hook, 6, yet it will be understood the device may be used for anchoring other securing means.
Although I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, I would not be understood as being limited to such specific construction, for various alterations and modifications may be made in the details of construction and arrangements of parts herein disclosed without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim, to-wit,
A stake of the class described consisting of the stake proper, an arm rigidly connected with the upper end of said stake proper, and projecting therefrom at an acute angle thereto, said arm being provided at its free end with a downward extension substantially parallel with the body of the stake, and a downwardly-opening hook at the upper end of the stake proper on the side thereof remote from the arm for engaging and holding a tent rope, or the like, said hook being disposed below the plane of the upper face of said arm, whereby the stake and extension may be driven into the ground with a rope received under said downwardlyopening hook and extended away from the stake in such a manner that the draft on the rope will tend to force said arm against the surface of the ground.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 21st day of February, 1923.
ARIE KLEINHESSELINK.
