Description

J. B. ROBERTS- TROUSERS STRETCHER Filed no). 14, 1924 Sept. 29,1925.
Patented Septe 29, 1925,
UNITED smiles JEROME B. ROBERTS, OF GLEN OLDEN, PENNSYLVANIA.
TROUSERS STRETGHER.
Application filed November 14, 1924. Serial No. 749,951. v
T 0 all whom it may concern.
a citizen of the United States, residing at- Glen Olden, in the county of Delaware, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Trousers Stretcher; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,-and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to trousers stretcher-s and has for its object to provide a device of this character comprising an elongated looped member formed from spring wire and adapted to be forcediinto a garment, for instance as a trouser leg for exerting outward pressure thereon for maintaining the trousers leg in shape.
A further object is to provide a transverse brace on the looped member formed from a spring wire having a plurality of bends therein, thereby insuring a wide range of adjustability and flexibility, and to provide means whereby the transversely disposed member may be adjusted longitudinally in relation to the looped member for exerting outward pressure on the sides thereof at any particular point.
A further object is to provide one end of the looped member with a convolution which allows a wide range of compression of the device from opposite sides thereby allowing the device to be used in trousers legs of different size, as well as in sleeves.
WVith the above and other objects in View the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawing, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a View in elevation of the stretcher.
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1, but showing the same compressed and within a trousers leg. a ,7
Figure 3 is a detail view showing one end of the looped member without a split. 1
Referring to the drawing, thefnu'ineral 1, designates elongated looped member formed from spring wire, and from" a single piece of wire. One end of the member 1 is provided with a convolution 2 in the plane thereof, which convolution, by being formed from spring material exerts an outward pressure on the longitudinal arms 3 forming the sides of the device for stretching the leg 4 of a pair of trousers 5 and maintaining the same in shape. The convolution 2 also forms means whereby the trousers may be suspended from a hook 6 if de sired, that is when the stretching device is in each leg thereof. Disposed between the arms 3 and slidably connected to said arms by means of sleeves 7 is a spring 8, which spring is formed from flexible material, and is provided with a plurality of oppositely disposed bends 9, which allow the wide range of compression of the spring according to the size of the trousers leg. \Vhen the stretcher is in position as shown in Fig ure 2, it will be noted the spring 8 and the convolution 2 are held in tensioned position by engaging opposite sides of the leg 4, therefore the arms 3 of the looped member 1 are held in close engagement with the inner wall of the trousers and at opposite sides thereof, thereby insuring a positive stretching of the trouser leg.
In the form shown in Figures 1 and 2 the ends of the arms 3 are curved as shown at 10 towards each other and terminate adjacent each other, therefore it will be seen that the ends of the portions 10 may overlap when the device is used in a small trousers leg. or move away from each other when the device is used in a large leg.
Referring to Figure 3, wherein a modified form is shown, the construction is the same as shown in Figures 1 and 2 with the exception the end portions 10 of the arms 3 are soldered or otherwise connected together at 11, which however will not allow the great range of flexibility as shown in Figure 2, however the operation is substantially the same. Although the device has been described in connection with a trouser leg, it is to be understood it may be used in connection with various articles of apparel for instance coat sleeves or neckties.
From the above itv will be seen thata garment stretchingdevice is provided, which is formed substantially from a. single piece of sprin wire bent upo iit's'elfjoi" firdvide a convo ution easements-1y c'tis os'ed arms carried by the convolution and a compresssible*connecting spring connecting the arms, and longitudinally adjustable on the arms whereby the expansive pressure of the arms on the interior wall of the garment may be varied.
The invention having been s*t forth what is claimed as new and useful is 1. An elongated looped member formed from spring wire, a spring convolution in one end of said looped member, a spring member disposed within the looped member and connecting the opposite sides thereof, said spring member being provided with sleeves slidably mounted in the opposite sides of the looped member, said spring member being provided with a plurality of oppositely disposed bends disposed in the same plane as the looped member said looped member at the opposite end thereof to the spring convolution being split.
2. A garment stretching device comprising an elongated looped member, said looped member having oppositely disposed arms and formed from spring wire, a spring convolution at one end of the looped memher, an expansible spring member connecting the arms of the looped member, said expansible spring member having its ends provided with sleeves slidably mounted on the arms of the looped member, said expansible spring member being provided with a plurality of oppositely extending loops in the plane of the looped member.
3. A garment stretching device comprising a spring convolution, oppositely disposed arms Carried by the ends of the convolution and adapted to engage within a garment, an expansible spring disposed between said arms, the ends of said expansible spring being slidably mounted on said arm and forming means whereby said eXpansible spring may be positioned in various positions in relation to the spring convolution.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
