U The object of my invention isto perfect a .moldfor formapparatus for the manufacture of the type of flashing formingthe subject matter of Letters PatentNo.1,287,23.5, issued to myself on December 10th, 1918, wherein I show a flashingformed ofa galvanizedlmetal plate having a raised flange in the shape of a truncated cone formed therein and provided at its upper edge with suitable grip or lock means which are cast jointed in alead flange or lip which gives the desired shape and arrangement to'the pipe engaging portion of' the flashing. In perfecting an apparatus for the molding of this lead flange on the flashing plate,.I provide a male die and mold member. adapted to fit into and project through the flange on the flashing plate' and I hinge a female die or mold member so that it will swing towards and canbe clamped soas to press the base ofthe flange on the flashing plate against the male die, said dies being shaped to. provide the necessary annular mold space for the lead ring into which the top edge of the flashing flange projects. .The assembled mold is then swung from horizontal to vertical position and the lead ring is poured.
The details of construction of my invention and manner of operation will be better understood by reference to the accompanying. drawings which form a part of this specifi catioln and in which Fig. 1 is aside elevation of the assembled mold ready for pouring. The frame members 20 and 21 are suitably secured to the neck portion 22 on the female die, said portion terminating overhead in a shoulder or flange 23 against which a shoulder on the nut 24 bears, the upper end of the nut rising through and above the flange and having made fast thereon a handle 25. The nut rotates in a cylindrical recess formed in the shoulder 22 and has at opposite ends partial threads 27 which are adapted to co-act with the partial threads on the screw post 17 when the nut is turned to the position shown in Fig. 3. hen however the nut is swung 90 in either direction from the position shown in Fig. 3, its threads entirely disengage the threads on the post, leaving the mold die members free to separate. When however the threads are engaged and the handle 25 is moved to the position shown in Fig. 3, the die members are not only engaged but they are positively clamped together. The female die on its internal surface has a shoulder 28 which engages the ledge 16 of the male die and overhangs beyond same the width of the upper edge of the lead lip 29. From the outer edge of this shoulder 28 the inner mold surface proper bulges inwardly to thin out the metal in the neck near its center and then flares outwardly and downwardly to form the base portion 30 of the mold which conforms to and is adapted to engage and clamp the plate flange 12 when the mold die members are clamped together. The female die is formed with a pouring gate 31. The base plate 4 is provided with a lifting grip or handle 32. The swinging mold frame members 18 carry a stop lug 33 which will engage the base plate and hold the frame in upright position.
In operation, the base plate 4 is lowered to horizontal position, the female die is swung up into open position see Fig. 2, a flashing plate 12 is fitted over and pressed down on the male die 8, the female die is then swung down with the handle 25 in the position shown in Fig. 2, which brings a screw post and the nut into assembled posi tion ready for their threads to engage. The arm 25 is then swung around 90, clamping the female die against the male die and causing the die portions 11 and 30 to clamp firmly between them the plate flange 12, leaving its upper edge projecting into the mold cavity above the ledge 14:. The handle 32 is then grasped, the mold is swung into upright position, the lead is poured through the gate 31 and fills the annular cavity in the mold and at the same time cast joints itself to the top of the plate flange 12. The arm 23 is swung back to horizontal position and the female die is raised to vert a "Past es-j; Th perat th n with 2 chisel removes the runner, and the result is the finished flashing, as shown in cross section in Fig. 3. The operation can be very rapidly performed and the molds are kept at the correct temperature by the burner 6 so as to prevent the lead chilling too rapidly.
Though I have described with great particularity the details of the embodiment of the invention herein shown, it is not to be construed that I am limited thereto, as changes in arrangement and substitution of equivalents may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A mold of the character described, comprising co-acting male and female dies having substantially frusto conical portions adapted and shaped to firmly embrace all but the upper edge of a raised annular flange formed in a flashing plate, said dies providing a mold cavity for the cast jointing of a lead lip about the exposed upper edge of said flange, a gate for pouring the metal to form said lip, and means to clamp the dies in operating position. p
2. mold according to claim 1,'in combination with a hinged support on which the assembled mold is adapted to be swung into upright position for pouring the lip metal, and means to heat the mold while in its lowered position.
3. A mold in accordance with claim 1, in which the means to clamp the dies in operating position comprises co acting screw members having their threads partially re moved and adapted to be engaged and released by a partial relative rotation, and coacting elements on the dies to exclude the molten lip metal from the screw members.
4. A mold for casting a lead lip ring on a raised flashing plate flange, which comprises a male diefitting snugly into and projecting through and above the plate flange, a female die adapted to fit over the male die and to snugly embrace the plate flange, said mold dies having walls shaped and spaced to form a lip ring mold cavity into which the upper end of the plate flange projects, a gate giving access to said mold cavity, and means to clamp said dies together with their base portions tightly engaging the base of said plate flange.
5. A mold in accordance with claim 4:, in combination with a pivotallymounted supporting plate adapted to swing the assembled mold into upright position with the gate uppermost, and a heater to which the mold is exposed when the support is in lowered position.
