UNITED STATES WILLIAM KNOBLOCK, OF LONG ISLAND CITY, NEW YORK.
CONTAINER.
Application filed May 29, 1924. Serial No. 716,802.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM Knot-moon, a citizen of 'the United States, residing at Long Island City, in the county of Queens, State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Containers, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved means for carrying from place to place the usual box or container provided for the usual one or more cells comprising an electric storage battery, such as those used in lighting and ignition systems in automobiles.
Another object is to provide more specifically a container having walls, in combination with a member preferably extending peripherally around said walls and adapted to secure an article within said container, a lifting member for said container, and means to secure said first member and said lifting member to said container.
A further object is to provide a modified coinstruc'tion of this device comprising a. container and peripheral member secured thereto, and a lifting cradle extending from above the side of the container at one side downwardly and beneath said container to and upwardly beyond another side of the container, said cradle being preferably removably secured to said container by one or more detachable members normally attached tothe outer surface of the container walls.
And a still further object is to provide such a construction in the form of a container and peripheral member secured thereto, and a lifting member extending from outside of the container into the walls thereof and terminating beneath said peripheral member and adapted to exert a lifting force directly against the under portion of said last mentioned member.
With these and other objects in mind, this invention comprises, further details of construction and operation fully and clearly brought out in the following description, when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal central section through one form of the improved container, means for securing an article therein, and the improved lifting means.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary detail view of the upper end portion of the container showing the adjacent portion of the lifting means in elevation.
Figure 3 is a horizontal fragmentary section of the line 3 3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a perspective view ofthe improved lifting means comprising a Wire cradle.
Referring to the drawings, the container of the invention is shown as having a bottom wall 30, and walls 31, andk side walls 32, the outer surfaces of the end and bottom walls being provided with a pair of continuous parallel slots 33, in which are positioned the parallel rods 34 of a cradle-like support carrying device shown in Figure 4, said device also comprising handle portions 35 formed by the union of the members 34 at their opposite end portions. i
The upwardly extending end and side walls 31 and 32 are provided upon their in'- ner surfaces with a continuous peripheral groove 3G, having oppositely positioned depending offset portions 37 positioned centrally within the end walls 31. Normally positioned within the groove 36 is a marginal frame 38, with its upper end portions provided with an upwardly extending flange 39 overhanging the adjacent portion of the walls 31 and 32, and also with an upwardly extending flange 40 in a plane co-incident with that of the first-named flange, and said last named flange overhanging and being operative to retain within said container the several cells comprising an ordinary storage battery, or secondary electric unit 41.
Secured to the outer surfaces of the end walls 31 are plates 42, provided with offset grooved portions 43 registering with the grooves 33, and surrounding the end portions of the carrying members 34 and operative to hold the same in fixed position with respect to said container. Each of the plates 42 at its upper extent is bent inwardly at 44, to overhang and retain in fixed position the flanged portion of the frame 32, while said plate is held fixedly with respect to said container by means of a screw 45 passing through the same and also through the walls 31, and terminating inwardly in threaded engagement with a member 46 positioned within the grooved offset 37, and adapted to prevent the accidental longitudinal removal of said screw.
`With the construction of this form of the device thus described, it is obvious that there has been provided a means for retaining the individual cells of a storage battery within the container, said means being readily removed from said con'tainer to permit the removal of any one or more of said cells also therefrom, and also providing a carrying member With handles for transporting the entire storage battery or secondary electric unit from place to place.
Having thus described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination of a container having side Walls, and a frame adapted to be attached to said Walls, with a plate positioned against said Walls and having a` projection engaging said frame, and means to secure said plate to one of said Walls to secure said frame in operative position.
2. The combination of a container having side Walls, and a fr ame for retaining an article Within said container and adapted to be attached to said Walls, said frame having a projection operative to retain an article `Within said container, With a plate normally engaging said frame, and means to removably secure said plate in position to secure said frame to said container.
3. The combination of a container having side Walls, and a frame having a portion adapted to retain an article Within said container, a lifting member extending around the bottom and opposite side Walls of said container, and a plate normally securing said member to said container and having a portion adapted to engage said frame to retain said frame in operative position With respect to said container.
il. The combination of a container having side Walls, and a frame having a portion adapted to retain an article Within said container, a lifting member extending around the bottom and opposite side Walls of said container, a plate normally securing said member to Asaid container and having a portion adapted to engage said frame to retain said frame in operative position with respect to said container, and means to removably secure said plate to the adjacent Wall of said container.
5. rlhe combination of a container having a marginal recess, a frame Within said recess and having an inwardly directed projection, a lifting member for and extending around the opposite sides of said container, plates upon the said sides of said container to maintain said member against said sides, and said plates also engaging said frame to retain the same Within said groove, and means to removably secure said plates to said side Walls.
