Description

C. F. SCHRINER MEASUR I NG PUMP Filed April .17, 1922 Patented Sept. 22, 1925.
UNITED rSTATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES F. SCHRINER, 0F CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR T0 THE NATIONAL STEEL i BARREL COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
MEASURING PUMP.
To all 'whom t may concern: i
Be it known that 1, CHARLES F. SGHRINER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Measuring Pumps, ofwhich the following is a speciication.
This invention relates to measuring pumps for grease, oil or other liquids, and more particularly to the means for limiting the movement of the piston thereby measuring` a quantity pumped.
The main object of the invention is to provide a measuring pump of said char-- acter, which may be set to pump a smaller quantity as a pint, and then set to pump a larger quantityas a, quart without the necessity of returning the pump piston to its original position after the pumping of the first quantity.
Another object of the invention is to provide a measuring pump of said character having means for adjustment in order that correct smaller and larger quantities may be pumped.
Vith the above and other objects in view as will be readily understood, the invention will be. hereinafter fully described as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings similar characters of reference are used in the several views of the drawings to indicate corresponding parts.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pump with a measuring device constructed in accordance with my invention applied thereto,
Fig. 2 is a cross-Sectional View, takenon line 2 2 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view illustrating the measuring device when the push pin is set in its lower position,
- Fig. 4: is a similar viewafter the push pin of the measuring device has been forced to its higher position,
Fig. 5 illustrates a front view of the upper part of Fig. 3,'
Fig. 6 is a cross-sectional view, on an enlarged scale, taken on line 6-6 of Fig. 3, illustrating the hand lever of the push pin in its rst set position, and
Fig. 7 is ar similar view, the hand lever being arranged in alignment with the vertical slot of the tube.l
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the body or barrel of a grease pump having at its lower end an inlet pipe 2 for itting into a barrel from which the contents are to be pumped, and at its upper end a'discharge` nozzle 3. A suitable piston t is slidably mounted in the body 1, and fixed thereto is an upright rod 5 having teeth adapted to be engaged by a pinion 6 of a shaft 7, which isy rotated by means of' acrank-handle 8 for reciprocating `said piston. The piston rod 5 extends through a central opening 9 in the upper end or head 10 of the body 1. Fixed to said upper end of the body is an upright tubular member 11, which is adapted to receive the piston rod 5 as it is forced upwardly, and to the upper end of said tubular member is fixed a reducer 12. A push pin 13 is slidably mounted in said reducer, and a vertical tube 111 is fixed thereto for receiving said push pin as it is moved upwardly. Forming a part of and extending from the top of they push pin 13 is a hand lever 15, which is adapted to be moved in and out of a. horizontal slot 16 in the reducer 12, either to set the push pin at its lower position, or turn the hand lever so that it will be in alignment with a vertical slot 17 in the reducer and a slot 1S in the tube 14 aligning therewithto allow said push pin to ,move upwardly to its higher position; A lug 19 is formed integrally with the reducer 12 above the horizontal slot 16, and threaded therein is ascrew 20 which is adapted to be engaged by said hand lever for serving as an adjustable stop for the push pin, and a similar screw 21 is threaded in the closed upper end of the tube 14 for engaging the upper end of the push pin 'to limit its higher. movement.
- In practice, the piston rod 5 and the push pin 13 are of such length that, when the piston 4 in its upper movement has discharged a certain quantity'from the pump, as a pint, the upper end of the piston rod will engage the lower end of the push p-in and thus limit the movement of the piston due to the hand lever 15 being set in the horizontal recess 16 and engaging the stop screw 20. If it is desired to pump a larger quantity, as a quart, without reversing the crank-handle 8, the hand lever 1,5A is setv in CFI alignment with the vertical slot 17 of the reducer and the slot 18 of the tube 14. The piston t may then move upwardly and lift the push pin 13 until its upper end enga-ges they ystop screw 21, thereby discharging a` quart. Upon reversing the crank-handle 8, the piston will fall and allow the lpush pin 13 to ret-urn to its originalposition.
From the foregoing, it is obvious that a smaller or larger quantity of grease or theY like may be discharged from the pump without reversing the crank-handle for opierating the same, that the device for accomplishing said purpose is readily set, and that adjustments are provided for accurate measurement. Although the device illustrated in connection with a pump is well adapted to accomplish the intended purpose, it vwill be understood that slight changes in the details of construction may be made within the scope of the claims.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim is: y Y y 1. In a measuring pump, the combination oit' a body, a `piston in the body, a rod hav' ing its lower end lined to the piston, means for actuating the piston, a tubular member adapted to receive the upper end of the rod, a push pin slidably mounted in the tubular member adapted to be engaged by the upper end of said rod, and means for holding the push pin in a set position, substantially as described.
