Be it known that L'ARTHUR SNowi EN,-a subject of the Kingof Great Britain, and a resident of the city of Vancouver, in the Province of British Columbia, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Measuring Pumps for Service Stations, of which the followin is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in measuring pumps for service stations, the objects of which are to provide means whereby the necessity of reversing the action of the pump by releasing the operating gear from the pump cylinder is avoided, and also to provide means whereby the pump action is arrested when the, desiredquantity of liquid is delivered.
The invention consists essentially of a multiple cylinder pump having a driven screw connected to its operating mechanism upon which a traveller is adapted to travel longitudinally until it reaches an adjustable stop, which is set to any desired gallonage, as will be more fully described in the following specification, in which Fig. 1 is a general view of the operating mechanism of the pump, showing a part of the pump barrels.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 22 of Figure 1.
In the drawings like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
The numeral 1 indicates a pair of pump cylinders capable of delivering a given delivery of liquid per stroke. 2 are the piston rods and 3 the connecting rods therefor.
The numeral 4 indicates a pair of standards upon which the operating and measur ing mechanism is carried. The numeral 5 indicates a main shaft having a pair of crank discs 6 and 6 to each of which a connecting rod 3 is operably mounted. The shaft 5 is provided with a gear 7 which is driven through an intermediate gear 8 by a pinion 9 upon a shaft 10, which shaft is rotated by a hand crank 11. The intermediate gear 8 is mounted upon a shaft 12 which is provided with a worm 13 having a definite number of turns to each unit of measurement, the purpose of which will hereinafter appear.
The numeral 14 indicates a circular bar having a square shank 15 which is slidably carried by the standards 4. The shank is fitted to a square aperture16 to-prevent rotation, and is adapted for endwise movement, the end of the shank being normally held by a compressionspring 17 away from the adjacent "disc,6
A plurality of keys 18 are set longitudi nally'of the barl l and are spaced apart to distances equivalent to the lead of the worm required to represent units of measurement of the pump delivery, and a co1]ar'19 is slidably mounted upon the 'barwhich is provided with a keyway 20 somewhat larger than the keys 18, so that it may be moved along the bar and brought to rest against any one of the keys by rotating ituntil the keys and keyway, are out of registerwith each other, boss'21 is-formed on the face of the collar to engage any one of the keys 18 to prevent the projecting stop 22 from falling beyond a horizontal position as shown in Figure 2.
The numeral 23 indicates a radial slot formed in the inner face of the disc 6", the bottom of which is inclined to correspond with the pitch of the worm 13.
Parallel to the shaft 8 a guide bar 24 is fitted, upon which a traveller 25 is endwise movable. The traveller is provided with a threaded half sleeve 26 which is adapted to engage the worm 13, and 27 isa stop which is adapted to engage the projection 22 of the collar 21 when the traveller is nearing its predetermined endwise movement upon the worm 18. Following the contact being made between the traveller and the collar 21, endwise movement is imparted to the bar 14 against the spring 17, causing the square shank 15 to enter the radial slot 23 in the disc 6 and to continue to project thereinto until the rotation of the disc is arrested by the end 28 of the slot 23 coming into engagement with the side of the shank 15, thus bringing the pump mechanism to rest and stopping the flow of liquid therefrom. v
When it is desired to deliver a given quantity equal to, or less than the total graduations (represented by the keys 18) provided, the collar is rotated and set adjacent the desired key and the traveller raised and set back at the starting end of the worm 14 and the hand crank 11 is rotated in a forward direction until the disc 6 is again stopped as above described.
