MOLDING APPARATUS.
Application filed August 27, 1921. Serial No. 496,030.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FREDERICK W. BURG- DORFER and EDWARD F. RODDY, citizens of the United States of America, and residents of the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful 'Im provements in a Molding Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a molding apparatus, and has forits primary object the purpose of providing improvements in that class of apparatuses known as pattern stripping machines.
Another object of the invention is to' provide an improved arrangement of pattern stripping parts in the molding apparatus,
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved molding'apparatus for forming the mold or impression in the sand flask as the flask in passed thereunder.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an improved combination of a sand pressing element and a sand retaining frame, both of which are relevant towards operating on a sand flask in conjunction with a molding apparatus of this improved character.
Other and further objects will appear in the specification and be specifically pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings exemplifying the invention and in which,

Figure 2 is an enlarged vertical section taken through this improved molding apparatus.
Figure 3 is an enlarged vertical section similar to Fig. 2, but showing the patterns of the apparatus in the act of being molded or impressed within the packed body of the sand flask.
Figure 4 is a bottom plan view on a reduced scale of Fig. 2.
Figure 5 is a horizontal section taken on a reduced scale on the line VV of Fig. 2.
Figure 6 is a horizontal section taken on a reduced scale on the line VI-VI of Fig. 2.
\Vith reference to the accompanying drawings, this improved molding apparatus is comprised of a rectangular body portion 1, having vertical walls 2 and a bottom plate 3, said walls and bottom plate forming a closure 4, and extending upwardly from said bottom plate is a plurality of pins 5,
each supporting a coil spring 6, each of said springs at their lower end being seated against a boss 7.
Movably mounted within the'closure4 is a top plate 8, which is provided a plu- I rality of spring seats 9, each'beingforthe' reception of theupper end of a respective coil spring 6, and formed in each of said seats is a "ertical bearing 10, each beingfor top plate- 8 is adaptedto abut by pressure of the springs 6"thereagainst Thetop plate 8 serves as a. pattern supporting plate, and from the disclosureof the drawings, circular patterns are provided,
and in this instance designate piston ring patterns 14, each patternat its upper end being provided with a series of'securing jaws through whichthe bolts 16 are passed-for securing them in suspended positions to the underside of the top plate 8, said patterns being of a lengthwherein when the top plate 8 is in elevated position as shown in Fig. 2, the lower edge-17 ofeach pattern will be flush with the lower face 18 ofthe bottom plate 3.
As disclosed in Fig. 4 of the drawings, four piston ring patterns 14 are shown, and so that each pattern can be depended through the bottom plate 3, circular openings 19 are provided, and located within each pattern is v an insert plate 20. the lower surface of each insert being held'in flush alinement with the lower surface 18 of the bottom plate 3.
For supporting each of the insert plates is a spider 21, each of said spiders being comprised of a series of arms 22, which are formed integral with the upper surface of f the bottom plate 3, the arms of each spider merging into a hub 23, each of the insert plates 20 being suspended from a respective spider hub 23 by a screw 2!.
In order for the piston patterns 14 to be suspended over the insert plates 20 as described, each pattern is provided with a series of vertical extending-slots 25, there being a slot for each of the arms 22 of each respective spider 21, and when each pattern is secured to the underside of the top plate 8, the respective arms of each spider are engaged within respective slots of each piston pattern,

lVhat we claim is:
7 1. In a molding apparatus, the-combination of anaouter arranged stripping element, 9:
an annular shaped imprinting element movable therefrom, and an inner arranged stripping element located concentrically of said imprinting element.
2. In a molding apparatus, the combination of a pair of stripping elements, and an annular shaped imprinting element movable therebetween.
3. In a molding apparatus, the combination of a stripping element, an imprinting element reciprocal therefrom, a second stripping element arranged interiorly of said imprinting element, and means for reciprocating said reciprocal element.
4. In a molding apparatus, the combination of a pressing element for engaging the sand in which an impression is to be formed, an impression forming element to be extended from said pressing element, and a second pressing element borne by said other pressing element arranged interiorly of said impression forming element.
5. In a molding apparatus, the combination of a pressing element for engaging the sand in which an impression is to be formed, an impression forming element to be extended from said pressing element, a second pressing element borne by said other pressing element arranged interorly of said impression forming element, and there being means for extending said element.
6. In a molding apparatus, the combination of a yieldingly held sand pressing element, an impression forming element to be extended from said pressing element, a sec ond pressing element borne by said first pressing element arranged interiorly of said impression forming element, and a movable frame depended .from said first -mentioned pressing element.
7. In a molding apparatus, the combination of a stripping plate, means whereby a sand flask can be arranged beneath said plate, an imprinting element movable from said plate into the sand of said flask, and an insert. plate located interiorly of said element movable with said stripping plate.
8. In a molding apparatus, the combination of an outer stripping plate, means whereby a sand flask can be arranged beneath said plate, an imprinting element movable from said plate into the sand of said flask, an inner stripping plate arranged interiorly of said element, and means for op erating said imprinting element towards and away from said flask.
9. In a molding apparatus, the combination of a pressing element, a sand flask to be arranged beneath said element so that the sand contained therein can be pressed by said element, an impression forming element associated with said pressing element to be extended from said pressing element into the sand of said flask, and an insert plate arranged concentric to said impression forming element movable with said pressing element.
10. In a molding apparatus, the combination of a sand pressing element, an imprinting member reciprocal in said element, an insert plate co-operable with said member, means provided for supporting the sand flask in operating alinement with said element, means for reciprocating said member,
and resilient means associated with said pressing element.
11. In a molding apparatus, the combination of a pressing element for engaging the sand in which an impression is to be made, an impression member co-operable with said element, and a movable frame into which said element is to reciprocate.
12. In a molding apparatus, the combinationof a pressing element for engaging the sand in which an impression is to be formed, an impression forming element to be extended from said pressing element, and a reciprocable sand retaining frame into which said element is to reciprocate.
13. In a molding apparatus, the combination of a stripping plate, means whereby a sand flask can be arranged beneath said plate, an imprinting element movable from said plate into the sand of said flask, and a reciprocable sand retaining frame co-operable with said flask and into which said stripping plate is to reciprocate.
14. In a molding apparatus, the combination of a pressing element, a sand flask to be arranged beneath said element so that the sand contained therein can be pressed by said element, an impression forming element associated with said pressing element, and a reciprocable sand retaining frame arranged above said flask co-operablewith said pressing element.
15. In a molding apparatus, the combination of a pressing element for en aging the sand in which an impression is to e formed, an impression forming element to be extended from said pressing element, and a reciprocable sand retaining frame into which said element is to reciprocate borne by said element.
