EPPA H. RYON, OF PASADENA, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO CROMPTON L KNOWLES LOOM WORKS, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF lVASSACI-IU- SETTS.
BINDER FOR SHUTTLE-CHANGINGLOOMS.
Application filed February 19, 1924. Serial No. $93,936.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, Erm H. RYON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pasadena, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and use* ful Binder for Shuttle-Changing Looms, of which the following is a. specification.
This invention relates to a shuttle chang ing loom of the type in which a single shuttle binder is mounted in fixed vertical pos1- tion and co-operates with either one of the shifting shuttle boxes which happens to be in running position. A loom of this general type is shown in my prior application Serial No. 629,243, filed April 2, 1923.
It is the general object of my invention to provide an improved binder so constructed that the binder will be firmly supported at one end only.
To the attainment of this object, I provide a binder having a bearing portion extended beyond its pivot and .providing a firm and substantial support therefor.
A preferred form of the invention is shown in the drawings in which Fig. 1 is a plan view of one end of a lay for a shuttle changing loom, with my improved binder mounted thereon;
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged partial plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 1, with certain parts shown in section; and
Fig. 4L is an enlarged front elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings, I have shown a portion of a lay 10 supported upon the usual swords 11 and having vertical frames and guide-ways v12 and 13 for a shifting shuttle box structure 15. These parts are substantially as shown vin my prior applica tion and in themselves form no part of my present invention.
A bracket 1G is secured to the front of the frame or guide-way 13 and provides a pivot 17 for a binder 18, The binder 18 extends across the front of the shifting shuttle boxes and its extreme outer end 19 rests against a guiding surface 20 on the shifting box structure 15. A depending arm or stop 21 may be secured to the top face of the upper shuttle box and extends downward to prevent excess outward movement of the binder. The binder is provided with a depending portion 22 and with kan upward projection 23, for engaging the shuttles in every vertical position of the shuttle boxes, as fully explained in my prior application.
The binder 18 is provided with a bearing portion 2li (Fig. 3) which extends a substantial distance to the left of the pivot 17, as viewed in the drawings, and which has its extreme outer end 25 bent to project forward as clearly shown in Figi-3. rlhis portion 25 of thev binder portion 24- extends through an elongated slot or opening 2l' in the bracket 16 and has a sliding engagement with upper and lower bearing surfaces 28 and 29. A spring 30 is mounted on a connecting portion 31 of the bracket 1G and extends to the right. to engage the binder 18 in the usual manner.
Reference to the drawings will show tha the forward projection of the binder 18 and also the bearing surfaces 28 and 2S) of the support are spaced substantially to the left from the pivot 17 and thus afford a very firm support for,the binder, avoiding the necessity for any vertical support for the shuttle-engaging portion of the binder.
Having thus described my invention and the advantages thereof, do not wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed otherwise than as set forth in the claim, but what l claim is in a loom7 a shuttle binder and a support on which said binder is pivoted, said binder having a shuttle-engaging portion at one side of its pivot and having an extended bearing portion at the other side of its pivot, said bearing portion having an outturned end spaced from shuttle and having sliding engagement with bearing surfaces on said support substantially spaced from the pivot of the binder and disposed both above and below said bearing portion.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature.
EPPA H. RYON.
