THOMAS r. nain, or VANCOUVER, BRITISHC'OLUMBIA, CANADA.
BOILR.
i Application filed October 9, 1924. Serial No. 742,655.
To @ZZ whom z' may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS F. REID, a subjectof the King of Great Britain, and a resident of the city of` Vancouver, in the Province of British Columbia, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improveniente in Boilers, of which the followingis a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in boilers, with more particular reference to those used in hot waterheating systems, although my improvements may be applied yto steam boilers also, and the object of my invention is to provide aboiler .ofj extremely simple and strongconstruction in which the water heating is quickly effected and main* tained withgreat economy and ease so that the, entire system may be operated at a low cost and withv great efficiency with the minimum of attention and labour.
I Vattain this object by the construction illustrated. in "the accompanying drawings in whichf e Fig. 1 is an outside View of the boiler, 1n side elevation.
Fig. 2 is a` longitudinal` sectional View taken through .the centre line.
' Fig. 3is a front end view.` Fig. 4.is a rear end View. Fig. 5 is a front end view4 end plate removed. v
Fig. 6 Vis a. fragmentary sectionalview of the water-jacketed combustion chamber top. Fig. 7 is a plan view of It-he supplemental garbage-burning grate. Y
Similar figures of reference indicate s1m1- lar parts throughout the several views. Y
1 and 2 indicate the front and rear end plates of the boiler, formedout of steel plate of suitable'. thickness and suitably spaced apart, the front end plate 1 being provided with the ashpit door 3, furnace door, 4, tube' cleaning door 5 .and sight or hand hole doors 6 and 7, these doors, of course, closing their with the front respectively identified openings in the plate,
as is well known, kwhile the rear end' plate2 is `provided with a. smoke outlet opening 8 -to which is connected ythe chimney pipe 9, as
shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Extending vlongitudinally between the front `and rear end Vplates adjacent their outer andV lower edges are water pipes 10 and 11, thesepipes ybeing projected eXte-V plates and having theirfront v ends capped, as at 12 and 13, while totheir riorly of the rear ends are fitted elbows 14 and 15 Vto which vertical water returnpipes 16 and 17' 1,554,177 UNITED STATE-s,` PATENT oFFlca,
are connected, and between the pipes 10 and Y 11 andl suitably supported thereon is the fire grate, indicated by the numeral 18, to whichv access is had lby opening the furnacedoor`4. `19 indicates a cylindrical water chamber 18 intermediate the f height of the boiler, which chamber is of less length than the distance betweenl the plates so'that at the rear end is formed a combustion chamber 2O communicating withthe firebox 21 while at the front `end is formed a smoke box` 22, the
disposed at asuitable height above the grate j A i smoke boxbeing separated from the irebox by'a plate 23, asshownin Fig. `2. The top ofthe combustion chamber is closed Vbyfa semi-circularplate 24, and 'secured to the plate 24 and spaced from it is a secondsemii circular plate 25 so that whenthespace between theplates is suppliedV with .water a water-jacketed top25ll for the combustion chamber is formed whichalso` serves the ,j
purpose ofan eXtra water chamber, form? ing an effective part of the heating system. Fitted in the water chamber 19 and extending from endv toend ofthe same are smoke tubes 2 6 which establish communication between the combustion chamber 20 and the smoke'box 22, whileconnecting `the Water chamber19, towardsits front and rearl ends, with the longitudinal pipes 10` and -11 are pipes 27e-28 and 29-30, thesepipes, on opposite sides, that is, 27-29 and 28-30,4 being inturn connected with pipe coils 31 and 32 respectively, in the manner shown in Fig. 2. i
33 indicates an'upper cylindricallwater chamber disposed above the chamberf19 and spaced therefrom toV provide ,a iue` 33a, which chamber abuts at its front end the frontend `plate 1 while at its rear end itv Ais-spaced from the rear end plate 2, as at 34, thej rear end of this chamber 33 preferably lying in the same verticaly `plane as the rear endof chamber l19. Chamber 33 is connected -to chamber 19 by vertical pipes4 35 and y36 spaced apart longitudinally,-as.y
shown in Fig. 2, and it is providedA on its upper side with a large T member 37 fitted with water outlet connections, indicated by the numeral 38, and with a safety valve 39. `40 indicates a pipe connection between the rear end of the water chamber 33 and `the .water jacket 25a, while 4lvindicates a pipe connection ybetween the water` jacket .and the pipe 10. The entire construction described in the foregoing, with the exception of the T member 37, is enclosed by a sheet metal covering 42 over a layer of asbestos 43, as shown in Fig.l 5.
In operation the flame, hot gases, and smoke pass from the fireboX rearwardly into the combustion chamber .20, forwardly through the smoke tubes 2b into the smoke boX 2Q, and then rearwardly again through the flueV B3 into the space 34 and out into the chimney `9, from which it will be seen that the entire ywater body, as contained in the pipes 10 and 11, pipes 27-2S and 29-30, coils 31 and 32, and the waterchambers 19, 95h, and 33, and which is relatively small as compared with the 'amount of heating surface, is Asubjected to the most intense heat so that the water is quickly 'heated and maintained at a high temperature with the minimum expenditure of labour and fuel.
Should it'be desired to burngarbage or other'refu'se a supplemental grate maybe added into the firebox which grate consists of longitudinalpipes i4 and 45 extending betweenA and connectedat their opposite ends to the'pi'pes '2T- 28 and'QS-SO, between which pipesitand 45. extends a horizontal pipe` coil 46 connectedtothem inthe manner shown in `Fig. 7,'thi`s coil forming a grate on whichthe 'garbage may be thrown and burned and providing aty the same time an economical means of securing additional heat. y
Y yFrom the foregoing it` willvbe seen that I have Vdevised a simple and strongly constructed boiler capable of being .used for heating purposes with greatfacility and -eflicieney and operated and maintained at a low kfuel and labour cost. l p
