ALEXANDER BUBNSIDE, 0F QVIILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
WRENCH.
Application filed December 12, 1924. Serial No. 755,464.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER Bunn- SIDE, a citizen o1 the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of M11- waukee and State of lNisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a french; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
This invention relates to wrenches.
The objects of this invention are to pro vide a wrench in which the jaws may be quickly adjusted without requiring laborious rotation of an adjusting screw or nut, in which a rough adjustment may be se cured, and an accurate finer adjustment secured in an automatic manner.
Further objects are to provide a wrench in which the relatively stationary portion is provided with a jaw which has a slight range of motion, and in which means are provided for automatically moving the aw towards the roughly adjustable jaw when the wrench is used in the normal manner.
Further objects are to provide a quick adjustment wrench in which both rough and fine adjustments are secured in a simple and efiicacious manner, and to provide a wrench which is strong, simple, and may be cheaply manufactured.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side View of the wrench with parts broken away,
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional View on the line 22 of Fig. -1,
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 44 of Fig. 1.
The wrench comprises a main body portion 1 which has a rectangular aperture 2 extending thereinto. This aperture slidably receives a rectangular shank 3 integrally formed with the movable jaw 4 of the wrench. The body portion 1 is provided with a handle 5 which extends outwardly in the usual manner. It is also provided with an integral lug 6 provided with a slot 7 therethrough. A pin 8 is passed transversely across the slot and is threaded into the lug, It is to be noted that the lug 6 is provided with an enlarged recess 9 which receives a spring 10, such spring loosely surrounding the pin 8. This pin pivotally carries a locking member 11 which is provided with a plurality :of teeth 12. These teeth have one side slanting and the other side extending directly across the latching member to provide abrupt shoulders, as clearly shown in Figure 1. The latching member is -further provided with a knurled manipu- .lating thumb piece 13 which projects outwardly from the other side of such latching member. 7
Referring to 1 and 4, it will be seen that the latching member 11 cooperates with the shank 3 of the movable jaw 4. This shank is provided with teeth 14 extending transversely thereof and with which the teeth 12 cooperate throughout the major portion of the width of the shank. 7
It is to be noted that the thumb-piece 13 may be rocked only in one direction, as shown in Fig. 4. This is readily accomplished by forming the teeth 12 straight across the latching member throughout a large portion of their extent and rounding the other side of the teeth, as shown at 12' in Fig. 4, thus affording clearance when the latching member is rocked in one direction and arresting its motion when vrocked in the other direction. The spring 10 holds the latching member frictionally in position and prevents thelatching member 11 from inadvertently releasing the shank 3.
The body portion 1 pivotally carries a lever composed of two members 15 mounted on opposite sides of such body portion and merging into a hollow shell like member 16 which normally encloses the handle 5 (see Fig. 1). The arms 1.5 are provided with relatively short bell crank or angularly projecting lever arms 17 which have their outer ends pivoted by means of the pin 18 to the extension 19 of the aw 20.
It is to be noted from Figs. 1, 2 and 3, that the lug 6 of the body portion is provided with a pin 21 which extends into a corresponding socket 22 formed in the jaw 20. It is to be noted further that the pin 21 is in reality a bracing projection which further functions as an auxiliary guide, for the jaw 20. It is slotted, as indicated at 23 in Fig. 3, to slidably accommodate the pin 18.
In using the device, the latch or looking member 11 is released and the jaws positioned on opposite sides of the work in approximately their finally adjusted position. Thereafter the latching member 11 is rocked into locking position, as shown in Fig. 4.
The operator then grasps: the members 16 and 5 and draws upon them in the usual manner. This rocks the hollow auxiliary handle 16 into contact or into proximit to the handle 5 and, through the medium of the bell crank members 17, forces the jaw 20 into closer proximity to the jaw 4:, thus tightening the jaws securely against the work.
It is to'be understood that the jaws 4 and 20 may be of any desired shape. For instance, the usual flat jaws provided with a serrated curved cutaway portion are illustrated in Fig. 1.
It will be seen that a quickly adjustable wrench has been provided which may be locked in rough adjustment, and which will automatically move into final adjustment in a simple manner when the wrench is manipulated in the usual manner.
It will be seen further that the wrench is of simple construction, is extremely strong, and may be easily operated.
Although the invention has been described in considerable detail, it is to be understood that the invention may be variously embodied and is, therefore, to be limited only as claimed. 7
Particular attention is directed to the fact that the jaws are provided with companion sets of semicircular teeth, whereby the wrench can be utilized as a pipe wrench, and owing to the fact that the operator can grip the pipe by pressure on the handle 16 and thereafter release said pressure, the wrench can be manipulated in the same manner as a ratchet wrench for'turning up pipe joints. v
Attention is also called to the fact that the short levers, which manipulate the movable jaw in conjunction with the extreme long handle lever 16, will develop a power approximately twelve to one, whereby a slightfpressure of the operator upon the wrench handle will develop into an enormously increased'power in turning nuts on or off without rotating the pipe;
I claim l. A wrench comprising a body portion provided with a handle and having an elongated aperture, a movable jaw having a shank slidably received within said aperture and provided with: a plurality of teeth, a latch carried by said body portion and having teeth adapted to engage the teeth of said shank, a second jaw associated with said body portion, and a lever pivoted to said body portion and having a handle positioned in proximity to said main handle, said lever having a short arm connected to said second jaw.
2. A wrench comprising a body portion provided with a handle and having an elon gated aperture, a movable jaw having a shank slidably received within said aperture and provided with a plurality of teeth, a latch pivotally carried by said body portion and adapted to swing transversely of said body portion and having teeth adapted to engage the teeth of said shank, a second jaw associated with said body portion, and a lever pivoted to said body portion and having a handle positioned in proximity to said main handle, said lever having a' short arm connected to said second jaw.
3. A wrench comprising a body portion provided with a handle and having an elongated aperture, a movable jaw having a shank slidably received within said aperture and provided with a plurality of teeth, a latch pivotally carried by said body portion and adapted to swing transversely of said body portion and having teeth adapted to engage the teeth of said shank, a second jaw associated with said body portion, and a lever pivoted to said body portion and having a handle positioned in proximity to said handle,-said lever having a short arm connected to said second jaw, the teeth of said latch being straight throughout the major portion of their extent and having their ends rounded adjacent one side of said'body portion.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of VVisconsin.
