. t f' its j This invention relates to compound-leverltools of which the tool commonlyA knownhasua ybolt lclipper is a' well known example, andthe object is to provide an'improved construction 'whereby' the relative ,position Loi the pivotal 1 centers may be adjusted as is necessary,tfor "example-in a .bolt clipper or like cutting `tool when the edges are resharpened andwouldthereaiter fail to meet unless suitable adjustmentlweremadel Theobject of the invention is to provide within the existing 'dimensional limitationsa simple, strong,
Vreadily manipulated construction andone which will` be free from objectionalclepn)trusion,v where- `iby 'the tool Vas a Whole will beof smooth or streamline exteiiorcontourh l l ,j 1 The invention willri-be well understoodiby reference to the following description of an illustra-` tive embodiment Vthereof as shownin theaccom-f panying drawing wherein `therelvis. .illustrated Ia toolof the bolt cutter type andI wherein:
Fig. 1 is an elevationoftheltool;` i 1 u Fig. 2 is an enlarged View of a portion of Fig.; 1 with `parts in section; and n 'A Figs. ingly numberedlines of Fig. 2 respectively.;`
3; 4 and 5 are sectionson" Referring tothe drawing, there `is there shpyvn a compound-lever' tool including; a@ pair` of Ajaw? carrying levers `6 pivotedbetweeri their `ends on the cross straps 8,l since in the enample :shown V the jaw leversdo` not cross, and haveopposed cutting edges I il.;
handle ievers lziivcted together at la, while the tails of the jaw-carrying levers are pivoted (each through an intermediary element hereinafter more fuuy described) at the points I6 .to` the handles in such a way that the pivots I4 and I6 define a toggle which is straightened as the handle levers are brought together to press the jaws Ill together with great force. To permit adjustment the connection of the jaw-carrying 4 levers to the handles is made through adjusting sections I8 pivoted to the jaw levers at I6 and to the handles at 20 and in operation are rigidly connected with one of the parts (herein the handle) to act as one therewith. Herein the section I8 takes the general form of a [channel with its web overlying the outwardly facing edges of the handle and with anges at either side thereof extending over the upper and lower portions of the jaw and handle levers and receiving the pivots I6 and 20. Adjusting means is provided for rigidly positioning the section relative to one of the parts, herein the handle, so that in use the pivot to that part, as 20, does not function as such. Y
IFhe levers 6 are operated by (icl. vsii- 193) i Ihe design of the securing means "presents many problems. The dimensions of the partslare restricted and great strain is 4exerted thereon. i
Screw devices adapted respectively topushand :5. pull theadjusting section relatively to the handle have been commonly used but in forms projecting from the side of the .tool and, have not `only been unsightly but inconvenient 1n use as they'i'are subject to damage and mayjcatch'lonfthe work or In the present instance the adjusting `section is swung outward or clockwise, 'viewingfjigl about thepvot 20 and pushedawayirom the .20 handle I2 .lbywmeansof `a headless s et screw. 22 tapped into the web ofthe `section I8 and bearing ,against the edge of the handle lever, the set screw Ifleeing provided with` a hekagon socket 2li to `receive a set-screwwrench of "well known form. Acting in oppositionto the strain `of theset 'screw and tending to `swing the adjusting sectioniinward or counterclockwise, viewing Fig. `2, vand thereby cooperating withscrew 22 rigidly to position the section, suitable pulling mechanism is n0 provided. The outwardly` facing edge Y of the v handle lever is here shown'provifded With an outwardly opening recess 26, the side walls of which are traversed by a cylindrical pin 28, the central portion of which is tapped. In one view the pin d may be considered a nut trunnione'd in the walls of the recess. This nut receives a screw b'olt 30 having a globose head 32 in the form of a spherical segment which is received within a recess 34 in lthe web of the adjusting section I8 to cooperate therewith in the manner of a lball and socket joint. The outer end of the screw is provided with means to receive an axially applied turning tool and herein is illustrated as having a hexagon socket 36 for a set screw wrench. On lmovement of the adjusting section a'bout the pivot 20 the pin 28 m-ay shift angularly in its journal bearings While the` head may turn in the socket 34. There is no impediment toa rotation of the vbolt about its longitudinal axis when ad- 50 justment is to lbe made,Y whatever the angular position of the parts. i
The handle lever I2 as a whole may be of generally I beam form having a central web and a` peripheral ilange. The walls of the recess 26 may 55 be provided by a pad or thickening of the web 2U and'adapted to be moved i merging with such ange at either side as best l seen in Fig. 2 and the entrance to the recess parts are to be adjusted to move the jaws ,l.!l

further outward beyond the outer contour .of.., f,
the adjusting section. The parts remainsubf stantially flush, contributing to the'appearance of the tool and to its utility since there are nog parts to catch in the work or in exterior objects. 'y-It will beseen that'the 'device is simple, well adaptedto delicate'adjustr'nent by simple tools, and'maybe'ruggedly' constructed to provide 'adequate strengthinjj'the` somewhat restricted dirnen'sionsfrovided in a hand tool-of -the type underfconsideratio'n'. i L f 'It will .be lapparentthat the' 'inventionrnay be embediee in ether-specific formsv without depart ing'from` the `spiritr essential attributes thereof, andthe present embodiment should therefore be considered in, all respects as illustrative.` and not '1"estrictive, as is infact clear ih'several matters from'the description itself; Reference is to be had to the appended claims to indicate those principles 1of the inventionfexempliiiedby'the particular embodiment described and which itis desired to secure'by Letters Patent.Y
