W. G. DAVIDSON vxsnm: INDEX azconn I-iied March 31. 1920 2 Shuts-Shanta 7 }2 52655 I 'Z a Waggon v 7;
Patented Sept. 15, 1925'.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM G. DAVIDSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
VISIBLE mnnx nnoonn Application filed March 31, 1920. Serial No. 870,810.
The object of the invention is to provide a visible index record of the type specified, which shall be simple in construction and operation and which is adapted to contain a relatively very large number of individual records in a given space as compared with any record of this type of which I have any knowledge.
. In accordance with my invention, my improved visible index record comprises a base plate secured to which, by a flexible connection, is a plurality of supports, said supports being arranged so that they will overlap, the relation being such that a portion of the free edge of each of said hinged supports will be exposed when said hinged supports lie in normal flatwise positions, each of said hinged supports being provided on both sides, adjacent to its hinged edge, with pockets adapted to receive the edges of cards, the relation being such that when a card is inserted into said pockets, respectively, it will lie fiat against said hinged support with its outer edge substantially even with the outer edge of the hinged support to which it is thus removably attached, whereby a suflicient portion of the free edge .of said .card will be exposed to receive a name, ad-' dress or other identifying data. Also, to provide for making entries on both sides of cards carried by said hinged supports, said cards, respectively, are constructed to foldat the edges of the pockets in which they are secured, so that they may be folded over or down to expose the sides thereof which normally -rest in contact with the surfaces of said hingedsupports.
The invention also comprises the various other features, combinations of features and details of construction hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, in which my invention is fully illustrated,
Figure' 1 is a face or plan view of a vls ble index record of my invention showing hinged supports turned in opposite directions to expose opposite sides thereof, respectlvely. Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary side view thereof.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view substantially like Fig. 1, showing one of the cards carried by a hinged support, turned back to expose the reverse side thereof which normally hes flat against said hingedsupport.
Figure 4 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1; and
Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary view illustratin the construction. of the pockets on the hinged supports which carry the index'cards.
Referring now to thedrawings, 1 designates, a base plate, which will preferably be made of heavy bindersboard, but may be I made of any other suitable material.
Secured to said base plate 1 by means of a flexible connection so that they may be turned to lie with either side thereof ex: posed, is a plurality of what appropriately may be designated hinged supports 2. In practice, I contemplate making said hinged supports of a grade of wrapping paper sufliciently heavy and stiff to retain its shape, the attached endsv of which are gummed or pasted to said base plate, said hinged supports being also preferably scored or perforated adjacent to their hinges, as shown at 3, to provide'for conveniently turning them to expose both sides thereof.
Said hinged supports are arranged in overlapping series, the relation being such that a portion of the free edge of each of said hinged supports, say from one-quarter to five-sixteenths of an inch, will be exposed when said hinged supports lie 1n normal flatwise position.
Formed on both sides of said hinged supports adjacent to their attached edges are pockets adapted to receive the edges of cards 5, thereby providing for removably securing cards to both sides of said hinged supports.
As shown, sald pockets are formed by strips of paper 6, the edges of which adjacent to the hinges of the hinged supports 2 are pasted or otherwise rigidly secured to said hinged supports, leaving the opposite edges of said strips free, and the lateral edges of said strips corresponding to the lateral edges of the hinged supports 2, being likewise rlgidly secured to said hinged supports, convenient means for this purpose consisting of clips 7 applied to opposite ends of the strips-6 secured to opposite sides of each hinged support 2, the relation being such that the unattached portions of said posed when said hinged supports lie inznormal flatwise position, such exposed portions of said cards being designed to receiv a name, address or other identifying data.
The cards 5 are constructed and arranged to fold 0n-lines parallel with and adjacent to the edges thereof designed to be inserted into the pockets 4, the relation being such that said lines of fold will be even with or a little outside of the edges of the strips 6 forming said pockets, thus providing for folding said cards over to expose the reverse sides thereof, that is, the sides which normally lie in contact with the surfaces of the hinged supports 2, thus providing for making or examining entries on the reverse sides of said cards without removing them from the pockets in which they are secured. To provide for conveniently folding said cards on desired lines, they are preferably scored or-perforated along the lines of fold, as shown at 8.
In practice, the names of the subjects to which entries to be made on the cards 5 re-' late, as the names of individuals, different kinds of merchandiseor other articles or subjects, are printed'on the portions otsaid cards which will be exposed when the hinged supports 2 lie in normal flatwise position, together with 'the addresses of such individuals or other identifying data, the cards with the identification entries arranged in alphabetical order, being then inserted into 7 the pockets on the hinged supports 2, cards containing names beginning with the first letters of the alphabet, as from A to M,
being secured to what, for purposes of convenient reference, may be referred-to as the said cards will be upside down as regards the entries on the front sides.
If, however, the hinged supports2 are se- Thus, with the arrangement shown in cured to the base plate 1 so as to turn like the leaves of a book, the printed matter and entries on all of the cards would be right side up, v
The base plate 1 is made sufiiciently long so that the hinged supports 2 will rest in' contact therewith when turned to expose the cards secured to either or both, sides thereof.
In the preferable construction shown, a cover section 9 is hinged to one edge of the base plate in such manner that itt-may be folded over the base plate 1 and the hinged supports 2 carrying the cards 5 secured thereto,- thus protecting the record portion of the device from injury when not in use, and particularly when being handled or shipped.
Where the section 9 attached to the base plate 1 merely forms a cover for said base plate and the hinged supports carried thereby, it may be made considerably lighter than said base plate, but my invention contem plates equally making it of material of the same kind and character as the base plate 1 and utilizing it -to carry hinged supports 2 and cards 5 in the same manner as the base plate 1, thereby doubling the, capacity of the record. As the hinged supports, pockets and cards will be in all respects the same as herein shown and described in connection with the base plate 1, any person of ordinary skill in the art can readily reproduce them in connection with the cover portion 9 and the same need not, therefore, be shown or described in detail, as to do so would merely result in needless repetitionv and in unduly extending the specification Without adding clearness thereto.
7 I claim 1. In a visible index record, the combination of a base plate, a plurality of hinged supports attached thereto, pockets formed on both sides of said hinged supportsadjacent to their points of attachment tosaid base plate adapted to receive the edges of record cards, said hinged supports being arranged in series and the relation being such that when said hinged supports lie in normal flatwise position, a portion of the free edge of each of the cards on the exposed sides of said hinged supports will be visible, substantially as described.
2. In a visible index record, the combination of a base plate, a plurality of hinged supports attached thereto, pockets on said hinged supports adjacent to their points of attachment to said base plate adapted to receive the edges of record cards, said hinged supports being arranged'in series and the relation'being suchthat when said hinged supports lie in 'normalflatwise position, a portion of the free edge of each of .said cards adapted to receive index entries will be visible, saidrecord cards being constructed and arranged to-fold over to expose the reverse sides thereof, substantially as described. e
:- p 3. In a visible index record, the combination of a base plate, a plurality of hinged supports attached thereto, pockets on said hinged supports adjacent to their points of attachment to said base (plate adapted to recards adapted to receive index entries, will be visible, the pockets on said hinged supports consisting of strips of flexible ma- I terial, the edges of .which adjacent to the hinges of said hinged supports are gumnled or otherwise attached to said hinged suports and the opposite edges of which are ee, 'and means for attaching the lateral stri s to said hinged supports, substantially as escribed. a 4. In a visible index record, the combinamargins of the free edges of said flexible tion of a base plate, a plurality of hinged supports attached thereto, pockets on said hinged supports ad'acent to their points of attachment to said ase late adapted to receive the ed s of recor cards, said hinged sulpports bemg arranged in series and the reation being sucli that'when said hinged supports lie in normal flatwise ositiona portion of the free edge of eac of said cards adapted to receive index entries, will be visible, the pockets on said hinged supports consisting of strips of flexible material, the ed s of which adjacent. to the hinges of sai hin ed supports are gummed or otherwise attac ed to said hinged sup its and the opposite edges of which are ee, and cli s for-attaching the lateral margins of the ee edges of said flexible Stri e to said hinged supports, substantially as described.
In testimony that Iclaim the foregoing as my invention, I afiix my signature this 19th day of March, 1920. a 1 0 WM. G. DAVIDSON.
