SPOOL HOLDER.

To all whom. it may concern:

Be it known that we, THOMAS E. WV AsI-I- BURN and ZAGHARTAH TAYLOR HULL, citizens of the United States, and residents of Goalinga, in the county of Fresno and State'of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spool Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a spool holder.

The invention. more particularly relates to a holder for a spool of thread or the like. A spool of thread from which pieces or lengths are taken for hand sewing is usually retained in a basket or laid upon a table or stand and often becomes lost or the thread becomes unwound from the spool and causes inconvenience. With this in mind it is the object of the present invention to provide a holder for a spool of thread which will serve for supporting a spool of thread to be easily unwound and thu obviate the inconvenience of the lossof the spool of thread or unwinding of the thread therefrom as above referred to.

It is also an object of the invention that the spool hold-er be adapted for retaining a package of needles and thus to increase the convenience of the article.

It is a further object of the invention that the spool holder be provided with a thread cutter and thus again to increase the advantages thereof.

It is also an important object of the invention that the spool holder be of such design and construction that the same may be formed from one piece of sheet metal or the like.

Other objects and objects relating to details of construction will be hereinafter described.

The invention is illustrated by Way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which,

tangular in shape and having formed at each end an extension 11 which terminates in a circular portion 12. Each extension 11 hasits circular portion formed with an indentation or depression to provide upon its opposite surface a protrusion 13 which is hemispherical in shape as illustrated in Figure 3; these extensions are bent upwardly then inwardly and again upwardl so that the spool supporting arms resulting from such bendings may yield horizontally and vertically.

The extension 11 at one end of the blank hasits circular portion 12 formed with a pro3ection 14 in which there is Provided a V-shaped notch to form the two cutting edges 15, said edges terminating at their lower ends in a circular opening 16. At the other end of the body portion of the blank there is formed a pair of lug extensions 17, one occurring upon each side of the associated extension 11.

In forming the spool holder from the blank described, the longitudinal edges of the body portion of the blank are bent downwardly and then inwardly upon the dotted lines 18 and 19, respectively. The portions 21 are thus provided which serve as supporting means for the remainder of the body portion 10 and thusto provide a base generally'indicated by the reference character B for the spool holder. The longitudinal edge portion formed by bending the body portion of the blank upon the line 19 in each instance extends upwardly and then inwardly to provide the two ledges 22 which are in spaced relation with the bottom of the base B and adapted to support a package of needles. The lugs 17 are bent downwardly as shown in Figure 2 and thus to prevent the package of needles from sliding from the rear end of the needle holder. The extensions 11 are bent upwardly to form the two uprights R and preferably so bent that the curved portion 23 occurs in each upright adjacent the base B in order to give the same the required resiliency vertioally and horizontally.

As shown in Figure 1 a spool of thread S may be positioned between the uprights R. The protrusions 18 extend into the bore of the spool of thread and thus support the spool for rotative movement whereby the thread thereon may be unwound. The spool of thread may be easily removed after the thread thereon has been used. Thaup ig R having the protrusion 1d afiords a thread cutter and this should occur at the forwarc end of the holder. Also the package of needles is inserted in the forward end of the holder.

What we claim is:

1. A spool holder made from a one-piece blank for the purpose described, comprising a rectangular body portion having a re duced extension at each end and each extension terminating in an enlarged circular portion, said circular portions each provided with a depression providing a protrusion upon opposite faces of the exten sions, said extensions being bent upwardly, then inwardly and again upward-1y on transverse lines, providing spool supporting standards which may yield horizontally and vertically.

2. A spool holder of the character described, comprising an elongated sheet metal base or body portion with its longitudinal edges folded downwardly and inwardly and upwardly providing longitudinal supports for the device and also a pair of opposing ledges whereby to support a package of needles, and downwardly extending tangs at the rear end of the body portion adapted to cooperate with said ledges to hold the needle package in proper position and to prevent said package sliding through the rear end of the device.
