LINDEKE PEHMUTATI ON LOCK Filed July 2, 1924 A TTORNE YS Patented Sept. 8, 1925.` l Y y v 24 is provided with a recess or socket 29 whereby the spring pressed ball and socket function or cooperate to indicate each complete rotation of thel knob 24 and stem 22 with respect to the knob 16 and shaft 18. An 1nteriorly threaded sleeve 30 is threadedly engaged by the threaded portion 23 of the stem 22 and said sleeve isf provided with oppositely projecting radial arms 31 and 32 extending through the diametrically oppo- V site slots 19 and 20. The inner end portion of the knob 16 which projects into the side wall 17 of the casing has secured thereto a flange or collar 33 and a spring 34 is connected at one end as at 35 to theliange or collar 33 and its opposite end as at 36 to the side wall 17 for normally rotating the knob 16 and shaft 18 in one direction. The movement of the knob and shaft in said direction under the influence of the spring 34 is limited by the engagement of the arm 32 with a stop pin 37 extending transversely through the casing 10.v Under this arrangement it will thus be seen that the arms 31 and 32 are connected with the knob and shaft 18 for swinging movement therewith,
Y while said arms and the sleeve 30 are latwhich is transversely and longitudinally spaced from the slot 42. A locking dog 44 is pivoted as at 45 within each slot 41 and V42 and the nose 46 of each dog is normally forced downwardly by a leaf spring 47 whereby the nose protrudes into the keeper V slot 40 of the face plate 39. Each dog is further provided with an upstanding leg 48. The stationary or integral leaf 14a of the bolt carrier 13 is provided with a depending lug or projection 49 and is formed adjacent thereto with a slot 50. The inner face of the upper wall 51 of the casing is provided with a face plate 52 having a series of ratchet or rack slots 53. A spring pressed pawl 54 is pivoted to the lug or projection 49 at 55. In use and operation of the device, assuming the bolt to be in a projected or locked position as illustrated in Fig. 1 and it is desired to move the same to a locked or retracted position within the bolt opening 12, the operator grasps the outer manipulating knob 24 and turns the same the appropriate number of revolutions with respect to the knob 16 to axially move the sleeve 30 and its arm 31 laterally in the casing^until said arm 31 registers or alines with the leg 48 of the dog in the slot 41. When the arm 31 is in registry with the arm 48 of the first dog the manipulatingknob-l is turned in a direction against the action of the spring 34 to engage the arm 31 with the leg 48. The initial movementof the arm V31 will swing the nose 46 of the dog upwardly and .out of engagement with the rear edge 56 of the keeper slot and further continued movement of the arm Vby turning of the knob 16 will eect a rearward movement of the bolt ment of the bolt carrier in a forward'direction to reproject the bolt 1'4. The operator then again grasps the knob 24 and rotates said knob and the stem 22 the required number of revolutions toaxially move the'sleeve 30 and arm 31 to a position in registry or aline-ment with the leg 48 of the dog pivoted in the slot 42. When this position ofthe arm 31 is obtained, the knob 16' is again grasped and turned against'the action of the spring 34 to initially engage the arm 31 with the leg 48 of the dog to disengage its nose from the rear wall 56 of the keeper'slot 40. Further continued turning movement of the knob will cause the carrier to be moved rearwardly and the bolt retracted a further stage of itsv retracting movement The loperator again grasps the knob 24 and rotates the same together with the stem 22 the required number of revolutions to bring the arm 31 into registry or alinement with the projection 43, after which the knob 16 is grasped and turned against the action of the spring 34 to effect the Vfinal retractive stage of movement ofthe bolt 14.
With the bolt in a retracted position and it is desired to project the same through the bolt opening, the operator grasps the knob 24 and turns said knob and the stem 22 to axially move the sleeve 30 laterally in the casing to the position illustrated in Fig. 2, at which point the arm 32 now registers with the pawl 54. then turning the knob 16 against the action of the springv34, the arm 32 initially engages the pawl54 to swing the same to a position to disengagel move the carrier outwardly and project the;

In a permutation lock comprising a casing having a bolt opening therein, a bolt carrier mounted for sliding movement in the casing, a bolt carried thereby for projection and retraction through the bolt opening, a rotatory tubular shaft extending transversely through the casing and having longi tudinally diametrically disposed slots, an exteriorly disposed operating knob at one end of the shaft, a threaded stem extending through said shaft and a manipulating knob on the outer end of the stem, means for indicating each relative rotation of the stem fwith respect to the shaft, an exteriorly threaded sleeve engaging the threaded stem, a pair of diametrically disposed arms on the sleeve extending through the slots in the shaft for rotatory movement with the shaft and for axial movement with respect thereto upon relative rotation of the stem to the shaft, a stop pin extending transversely through the casing, means for normally ro- ;tating the shaft in a direction to engage one of the arms with the stop pin, a plate in the casing having a keeper slot, a plurality of longitudinally and transversely spaced spring pressed dogs pivotally carried by the bolt carrier and normally engaging in the keeper slot, a leg on each dog engageable by one of the sleeve arms when brought into lateral registration therewith by manipulation of the knob of the stem, and operable by rotation of the operating knob and shaft whereby to initially disengage the dog from the keeper and subsequently move the carrier member and bolt throughout one stage of its retraction.

In a permutation lock comprising a casing having a bolt opening therein, a bolt carrier mounted for sliding movement in the casing, a bolt carried thereby for projection and retraction through the bolt opening, a rotatory tubular 'shaft extending transversely through the casing and having longitudinally diametrically disposed slots, an
exteriorly disposed operating knob at one end of the shaft, a threaded stem extending through said shaft and a manipulating knob sleeve extending through the slots in theV shaft for rotatory movement with the shaft and for axial movement with respect thereto upon relative rotation of the stem to the shaft, a stopf pin extending transversely through the casing, means for normally rotating the shaft in a direction to engage one of the arms with the stop pin, a plate in the casing having a keeper slot, a plurality of longitudinally and transversely spaced spring pressed dogs pivotally carried by the bolt carrier and normally engaging in the keeper slot, a leg on each dog engageable by one of the sleeve arms when brought into lateral registration therewith by manipulation of the knob of the stem,` and operable by rotation of the operating knob and shaft whereby to initially disengage the dog from the keeper and subsequently move the carrier member and bolt throughout one stage of its retraction, and interengageable means on the bolt carrier and within the casing for preventing movement of the bolt carrier in a direction to project the bolt when partially retracted.

In a permutation lock comprising a casing having a bolt opening therein, a bolt carrier mounted for sliding movement in the casing, a bolt carried thereby for projection and retraction through the bolt opening, a rotatory tubular shaft extending transversely through the casing and having longitudinally diametrically disposed slots, an exteriorly disposed operating knob at one end of the shaft, a threaded stem extending through said shaft and a manipulating knob on the outer end of the stem, means for indicating each relative rotation of the stem with respect to the shaft, an Vexteriorly threaded sleeve engaging the threaded stem, a pair of diametrically disposed arms on the sleeve extending through the slots in the shaft for rotatory movement with the shaft and for axial movement with respect thereto upon relative rotation of the stem to the shaft, a stop pin extending transversely through the casing, means for normally rotating the shaft in a direction to engage one of the arms with the stop pin, a plate in the casing having a keeper slot, a plurality of longitudinally and transvlersely spacedspring pressed dogs pivotally carried by the bolt carrier and normally engaging in the keeper slot, a leg on each dog engageable by one of the sleeve arms when brought into lateral registration therewith by manipulation of the knob of the stem, and operable by rotation of the operating knob and shaft whereby to initially disensequently move the carrier member and bolt throughout one stage of its retraction7 and interengageable means on the bolt oarrier and Within the casing for preventing movement of the bolt carrier in a direction to project the bolt when partially retracted, said means being engageable by the other arm When the Sleeve is laterally moved to its full extent in the opposite direction to release said means upon movement of the operating knob and shaft and to fully project the bolt from the casing in a single operation. e
