IMPROVE\MENT IN REVOLVING HEAD-LIGHTS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,281, dated September 22, 1874; application filed May 22, 1874.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, PETER N. BEGIN, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented a Revolving Head- Light for Steam-Vessels, of which the following is a specification The object of my invention is to provide a head-light for steamers which can be adjusted to throw a beam of light ahead or at an angle with the ships course 5 and it is also capable of being inclined to an angle with the horizon for the purpose of enabling the navigator to see the buoys and stakes that mark a channel, or for any other similar purpose in a dark night.

Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section.

In the drawing, A represents a circular metal plate, which may be secured to the top of the pilot-house of a steamer, or to any other convenient place on her upper deck. From its center rises a stud, a, on which is centered a turn-table, B,mounted on rollers b, which travel on the periphery of the plate A. G is the lamp-case, supported on two standards, (1 cl, rising from opposite sides of the turn-table by two studs, 0 0, journaled in the tops of said standards, so that said case can be inclined from the horizontal plane, as well as turned around with the turn-table. D is a shaft with a crank 011 the rear end, and is journaled in hangers ff under the turn-table. On its inner end is a worm, e, which meshes with a geared segment, g, pendent from the case through a slot in the turn-table; by turning the crank the lamp-case can be inclined to any angle. E is a conical reflector in the case, the chimney of the lamp F passing up through its rear end-the products of combustion passing out through a hood, H, at the top,

. which prevents the wind from afl'ecting the flame. The case is provided with a door at one side, which gives access to the lamp, and is fitted with a dark slide, G, which may be used to close the frontof the case when the light is not required.

This lantern enables the navigator to make a landing and to steer through staked channels, or to discover floating or stationary obstructions on a dark night in them, and, if desired, can be used as a stationary head-light.

WVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In combination with a head-light for vessels, mounted on a turn-table, and arranged to be turned on a vertical axis, a shaft, D, provided with worm e, which meshes with a geared segment, g, for the purpose of inclinin g the lamp at any angle, as set forth.

2. In a. head-light, the combination, with the case 0, having the reflector E, plate A, stud co, turn-table B, studs 0, standard d,shatt D, worm e, and geared segment 9, all constructed and arranged substantially as described and shown.
