LOCKING DEVICE FOR LOOM TAKE-UP MECHANISM.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EPPA H. RYoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pasadena, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Locking Device for Loom Take-Up Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a loom take-up mechanism of the type in which the take-up roll is positively driven through a reversible bevel gear drive.
It is the general object of my invention to provide a gear shitting mechanism for this type of loom take-up, which will be effective to hold the normally operative bevel driving gear in positive engagement with its driven gear. Difficulty has been heretofore experienced from the accidental disengagement of these gears under driving strain, permitting the gear teeth to slip past each other and resulting in frequent breakage of teeth and in irregularties in the cloth. A device for preventing such disengagement of the gears has been heretofore shown in the prior patent to Came, No. 1,457,651, issued June 5, 1923.
It is a further object of my invention to improve the construction therein shown, retaining the advantages thereof while at the same time reducing the number of parts and simplifying the operation thereof.
WVith these general objects in view, my invention contemplates the provision of a manually operable transmitting member, effective to move one of the bevel driving gears to operative or driving position and also effective to lock the gear against disengagement by driving strain or pressure on the gear, while at the same time the gear may be easily moved to inoperative position by slight force applied to the operating handle.
My invention further relates to arrangements of parts and details of construction which will be hereinafter described and more specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
Preferred forms of. the invention are shown in the drawings, in which Fig. 1 is an end elevation of parts of a loom embodying one form of my improvements;

Referring to the drawings, I have shown a loom side 10011 which is mounted a pattern chain mechanism 11, a driving shaft 12 and Y an uprightshaft 13 connected with the drivmg shaft 12 by bevel gears 14. An idle bevel gear 15 is mounted on the loom side 10 and engages a bevel pinion 16 on a worm shaft 17 havin a worm 18 engaging a worm gear 19 from which the take-up roll" is driven.
A sleeve 20 is splined to the shaft Band is provided with oppositely disposed bevel gears 21 and 22, either one of which may be moved into engagement with'the idle bevel gear 15. A yoke or lifting lever'23 projects into, an annulargroove 24 in the hub of the gear 21 and is connected by a lifting rod 25 and link 26 to a lever 27 mounted on a fixed pivot 28 and connected to a sliding rod or handle 30 by which it may be manually moved to a desired position. The normal position of the parts is shown in Fig. 1 with the rod 30 pushed in toward the pattern driving mechanism 11 and with the lifting rod 25 raised, thus moving the upper bevel gear 21 to operative driving engagement with the bevel gear 15. y
The parts thus far described are in general of the usual type and in themselves form no part of my present invention which relates particularly to the construction and operation of the lifting rod head 31. This head 31 is provided with an inclined cam slot 32 having an offset recess 33 at its lower end. A stud 34 extends through the slot 32 and is fixed on the loom side 10.
The operation of the locking device is as follows: When the lever 27 is moved from the dotted to the full line position shown in Fig. 1, the link 26 and head 31 are moved to the right to the positions shown in Fig. 1 and the cam slot 32 and stud 34 cooperate to transform this horizontal movement to the right into substantially vertical movement of the lifting rod 25. As the parts approach their limit of movement the stud 34 enters the offset recess 33.
WVhen in this position, the bevel driving gear 21 is held in driving engagement with the idle bevel gear 15. The engagement of the stud 34: with the substantially horizontal upper surface of the recess 33' thereafter holds the rod 25 and gear 21 from upward movement by any driving pressure applied to the gear. At thesame time, themember 31 may be easily moved horizontally by the sliding rod 30, lever'27and link 26, and
as soon as such horizontal movement is begun, the stud 34: leaves the ofiset recess 33 and enters the inclined slot 32, permitting the rod 25 to move'downward.
The gear 21 is thus automatically locked in driving position without any attention or additional movement by the operator and cannot be moved from such operative position by pressure on the gears, while it is readily moved to'inoper'ative position by the operator; 7 h
