IMPROVEMENTIN CORN-SHELLERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,248, dated September 22, 1874; application filed June 24, 1874.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that l, ENOCH LU'rz, of Vanderburg county, State of Indiana, have in vented an Improved Oorn-Shelling Implement, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to provide an implement for rapidly and conveniently shelling corn by hand.
The invention consists of two castings, one of which is to be secured upon a bench or other suitable support, and is constructed with two parallel side pieces, united by a series of transverse plates or bars, which are cutaway along the middle part of their upper edges to form a recess or depression for receiving the ear of corn to be shelled. The plates at each end of the casting are left at their full height, and serve to keep the ear within the casting. The other casting is in the form of a trough, and is also provided with a series of recessed transverse plates, in all respects like those above described. It is provided with a ham dle, and is to be placed, like a cover, upon the stationary casting containing the ear of corn, and moved back and forth by hand, thus shelling the grain from the cob.
In the accompanying drawing, illustrating my invention, A is the lower or stationary casting, and B is the upper or movable one. C O are the transverse plates or bars, cut
away, as shown at a, to receive the ear of corn which is to be shelled. D D are the plates at the ends of the castings. They are not cut away like the others, but are left at their full height, and serve as abutments to prevent the ear from being pushed out of the casting in the operation of shelling. b b are holes in the ends of casting A, through which screws may be inserted, to secure it to a bench or other suitable support. The casting Amay also be provided with raised sidesd to serve as guides for the upper casting, thus holding the two parts in proper Working relation.
The operation is as follows: The ear of corn is placed in the depressions formed in the transverse plates of casting A, and covered with the casting B, which is then moved back and forth by the hand of the operator, and, by means of the edges of the transverse plates, the corn is rapidly shelled from the cob.
WVhat I claim as my invention is- The corn shelling implement herein described, consisting of the castings A B, provided with the recessed transverse plates, substantially as and for the purpose described.
