'NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
A. J. SMITH, 0F PIQUA, OHIO.
CORN-SHELLER.
Speccation of Letters Patent No. 11,620, dated August 29, 1854.
To all whom 25 may concern Be it known that I, ANDREW J. SMITH, of Piqua, Miami county, Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Corn- Shellers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, and in which my machine is repre sented by a longitudinal section.
My invention has forits object the cleaning the corn and separating the refuse in a more effectual manner than is usually the case in corn shelling apparatus.
The feeding hopper (a.) shelling cylinder concave and fan (d) may be of usual construction.
(e, f,) is a continuous revolving apron, formed by a number of slats (e) attached to a pair of bands (f) in the manner coni- Of the two stretching rollers (g, L,) the rearmost one (g) is capable of sliding vertically in' the frame. To the end of the shaft of this roller is attached a flattened cam (see dotted lines 2') which impi'nging against a shoulder (see dotted lines j) is suddenly jolted up and down, and with it the roller and conveyer.
(la) is a board hinged to the frame at its rear edge and sloping obliquely forward,
having its front edge resting upon the rear portion of the apron. yielding to every motion of the carrier and rising and falling with Vit constantly occupies or fills the varying interval over the rear portion thereof and forms an effectual guard or barrier to the escape of cobs over the rear end of the apron.
Z are boards which conduct the corn to the spout. i
I wish it to be distinctly understood that I do not lay claim to any of the parts of this apparatus except in their mutual application and relative construction, substantially as here combined; but
That I claim herein as new and of my invention is- The yielding guard board (7c) having its rear edge somewhat elevated and hinged to the frame and resting by its front edge upon the rear portion of the shaking continuous carrier, so as constantly to fill the varying interval between the said carrier and the shelling concave for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof, hereunto set my hand before two subscribing witnesses.
ANDREV J. SMITH. Witnesses:
