Description

Patented Sept. 1, 1925.
UNITED STATES- oGAsAP HAROOTUNIAN, or Los Altertums,` CALIFORNIA.
SWIMMING DEVICE.
Application filed uly 9, 17924. Serial No. 72459.77.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OGAsAP HARooTUNIAN, a citizen of Armenia, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, Improvements in Swimming Devices, which the following is a specification;
l This invention relates to swimmers devices. I f
An object of this invention is to provide a buoyant support for bathers.
Another object of this invention is to provide a buoyant support which will support a beginner or person learning to swim in the proper position while in the water, that is, with' the top of the swimmers shoulders substantially even with the surface of the water and his legs somewhat below the surface of the water.
A further object of this invention is to provide a buoyantv support which can be held beneath the bather without the use of straps or similar devices and which will permit the free movement of the bathers limbs.
Vith these and other objects in view which will be made manifest from the following detailed description and specifically pointed out in the appended claims, reference is had to the accompanying drawings for an illustrative embodiment of the preferred form of the improved device, wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the buoyant support,
Fig. 2 is a section taken substantially on the line 22 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a view showing the improved support as applied to a bather.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which similar reference characters designate similar parts, a pneumatic bag is formed of a pair of duplicate pieces 10 and 11, one superposed upon the other and stitched around their edges, as at 12. These pieces are made of any material adapted to hold air or gas, such as rubberized fabric, oil cloth vand the like, and are shaped to provide a neck 13. tially T-shaped in form, and has oppositely extending side wings 14 and 15, which side wings have pointed extremities 16 and 17 respectively and are slightly curved rearwardly, as shown in Fig. 1. The bag has a rearwardly extending central portion 18 terminating in a'flarhave invented new and usefulY The bag is substaning extremity 19. Upon the oppositesides of the central portion 18 are formed a ypair vof opposite projections 2O and 21 which are arranged adjacent the side wings 14C and 15 and cooperate therewith to form a pairof recesses 22 andr23.l Y* i Air is admitted into the bag or expelled therefrom through the neck 13 in. which is provided a suitable stopper 24 having a metallic pin or eye 25, which may receivek a suitable cord, ,26, topermanently associate the stopper with the bag by securing one end of the cord 26 to the neck 13.
As shown in Fig. 3, the bag is placed beneath the ybather and the side wings 14 and v15 are bent over the bathers backthe`recesses 22 and 23 conforming with the contour of the bathers body. The central portion 18 rests beneath the trunk of the bather and the flaring extremity 19 is placed between his legs. In this manner it is seen that the side wings 14: and 15 tend to prevent the buoyant support from slipping rearwardly from beneath the bather, and that the flaring extension 19 prevents the support from slipping from beneath the batherl in the opposite direction. K
'Although the device herein shown has been described as a means for supporting amateur swimmers, it is to be understood that I contemplate the use of the device as an article for amusement. 1t is seen that the flaring Aextremity'lS) extends from between the bathers legs and projects above the surface of the water, as in Fig. 3. By using the buoyant support in the surf, a breaker, upon approaching the bather from the rear, strikes the flaring extremity 19 first and serves to easily propel the bather toward Athe shore, so that the buoyant support may be used to equal advantage as a surf board.
It is to be understood that various changes in the detail of construction may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
1 claim:
1. A bathers supporting device comprising a flexible, pneumatic bag, said bag having oppositely extending side wings adapted lto be placed beneath the arms of the bather and a rearwardly extending central portion adapted to be positioned between `the legs of the bather.
Wardly flaring rearwardly extendinggcentral portion.
3. A bathers supporting devicecnmpnising a pneumatic bag, said bag having a pair of oppositely extending' side wings adapted to be bent over the back of the bather, and a rearwardly extending central portion adaptedv to be' held1 between' the legs" ofthe bather. Y Y
AA' bathers vsupporting device comprising a pneumatic bag,l sa-i'dbag havingapair of oppositely extending side wingsadapted tov be bent over the back ofv the bather, a rearwardly extending cent-ral portion' adapted tol be heldj between the legs of thelather,v and;` projections formed upon the opposite sides of said central portion adapted t'o cooperate with said side wings to form recesses. Y i
5; A bathers supporting device comprising' a iexible7 pneumatic bag, said bag hayingoppositely extending: side wings adapted to be placed beneath the arms of the bather and? a". rearwardly extending central portion adapted to be positioned between the legs of the batflier,'V and means for admit-ting and.
expelling agas into and from said bag.
6. A bathers supportingdevice comprisingaliexible, buoyant member having oppositely extending side wings adapted tobe placed beneath: the arms of theV bather'and a rearwardly extending central portion adapted to be placed between the legs of the bather.' 'f In testimony whereof I havev signed my name to this specification.
