SWIMMING Device.
Specification of Letters Patent.
PatentedFeb. 20, 1917.
Applicationfiled July 8, 1916. Serial No. 108,213.
the latter to float upon the surface of the water, and provided with propelling means to afford the swimmer to propel himself through the water in a most safe, successful and rapid manner. r
The invent-ion consists of the special features of the construction and combination of parts as hereinafter described and claimed.
In describing the inventionreference is had to the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which- Figure l is a front view of my improved device showing the same as applied to the body of the swimmer.
Fig. 2 is a front view, showing the parts 7 of the device in their relative position.
Fig. 3 is a rear view showing the parts of the device as in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a side view of a rectangular shaped board as the lower part of legs of the swimmer.
Referring to Fig. 1 of the drawings, numeral 1 designates a swimmer. Secured to the abdominal part of the swimmer 1 is a support 2 which is attached by means of straps 5. 'An air-containing bag 3 carried upon each side of said support is provided with integral main straps neareach end thereof as at points 4i, 4- The upper portion of said bag 3 is detachably secured to said support 2 by attaching straps 17, 17 and the lower part thereof attached in a similar manner to a support 2 which is detachably'secured to the legof the swimmer, by means of straps 15; as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
An air containing bag 3 shouldersof the swimmer is also provided with main integral straps 5 Attaching straps 6 have one of their ends secured to said main straps 5 and the other-ends at tached to the upper portion of the support 2.
carried upon the propelling means 8, and
adapted to be secured to The purpose ofcarrying a bag upon the shoulders of the swimmer is :that the same willassist the action of the side bags 3, 3 and also keep the headof the swimmer up higher from the surface of the water, when the latter is swimming upon his back or baclnvardly.
Secured to the hand of the swimmer 1, is a common board 8, which is of a convexsliape in plan'view. Said board 8 is provided with securing straps 9, 9 and also a projecting portion 6 said portion 6 being designed for propelling purposes, pull water when swimming forwardly, and to I force the water backwardly when swimming upon his back. Finger securing means are carried upon said projectingportion 6 to secure the fingers therein as at 11.
Detachably securedto the lower part of the legs'of the swimmer is a common board 16, which is of a rectangular shape in plan View, and is provided with a leg-fitting strap 16 and also strapping means as at 18 and 18 Said board 16, has a projecting portion 6 adapted for propelling purposes, to force the water backwardly when the user is swi1nming upon his back or backwardly; and it is designed to assist the action of the hand also the floating operation of the device.
? By this construction and arrangement of parts the swimmer can easily swim several miles in a safe and successful manner; the latter when getting tired can stay upon the surface of the water without moving the parts of his body, and can swim either forwardly or backwardly as may be desired.
In the construction of the supporting structure 2, the latter is provided with an inflating tube connection composed of three parts l6 16 which extends centrally from the rear of said support into each of said bags 3 and 3 and having suitable valve connections to normally retain the air therein. r
Thus describing my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1s:-
1. In a device of the character described, a buoyant swimming structure, said structure composed of a support provided with straps for'securing to the abdominal part of the swimmer; an air-containing bag carried upon each side of said support and aving a main integral strap within and near to the upper and lower ends thereof;
strap connections extending from said upper end main integral straps to said support and attached thereto; similar strap connections extending also from the lower end main straps and attached to a support that is carried upon the upper portion of the leg part of the swimmer and provided with straps for securing thereto.
2.{ In a device of the character described a swimming structure, posed of three supports adapted to be detachably secured to the abdominal and the upper leg parts of the swimmer; air containers carried by said supports and provided with straps for attaching to the latter;
an air-containing bag secured upon the shoulders of the swimmer and provided with 7 main integral straps within and near each end thereof; attaching straps having one of their ends secured to said main straps Copies of this patent said structure comand the other ends attached to the upper portion of the abdominal support; an inflating tube connection composed of three parts extending centrally from the rear of said support into each of said bags, and suitable valve connections within each of the same to normally retain the air therein.
3. In a swimming device, a body support comprising an abdominal strap and a pair of leg straps, a pair of lateral buoyant members connected at their upper ends to said abdominal strap and at their lower ends to said leg straps, and a buoyant shouldermember connected to said abdominal strap.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
