.JOHAINNES J. BEBGSMALOF WELTEVBEJEN, JAVA.
PROCESS FOR PREPARING INCOIBUSTIIBLE AND INSULATING MATERIAL.-
llo Drawing.
1 '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jomxnns J. Bnnssma, a subject of the Queen of the Netherlands, and residin at Weltevreden, Java, Netherland East fndia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Processes for Preparing Incombustible and Insulating Materials, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a process for preparing incombustible and insulating materials and is based upon the use of the bark 9t trees, the said bark being mixed with suit- "able inorganic substances and binding mate rial, according to the desired appliances of the materials to be prepared.
Processes for the preparation of plastic materials are also known, in which in a similar way use is made of wood (wood-dust, chips, shavings, etc.) and it is also known to use cork, the bark of the cork-oak, for similar appliances.
According to the present invention use can be made of the bark of all kinds of trees, which material is obtainable in large quantities everywhere and nearly without value. .As an example of a bark which has been found suitable for the execution of the process it is pointed at the bark of the d'ati 30 tree growing in India, But as a matter of ressed isinte ated. After ad- 40 mixture of suitable iillmgg substance or substances, chosen accor n liances aimed at a bindin material is added and the mixture is worfied up to a homogeneous pappy or pulpous mass which can be employed in several ways. In one form of execution of the invention the mass is moulded to form-pieces of the desired shape in a moulding machine of any known construction, in which the mass is and thereafter the so obtained form-pieces are carried to a drying room for desiccation and can if desired finally be laned or polished at their surface. In another form of execution of the invention the mass is applied Application filed September 15, 1822. Serial ll'o. 588,479.
by way of an insulating layer upon other 55 materials, such as timber or iron.
The following example of the preparation of a plastic mass is given for the sake of more clearly emphasizing the manner wherein the claimed process can be carried out.
Pulverized bark, Portland cement and infusoria ear are orou con mom in e proportlon of 1 2 parts in weight, and thereupon a suflicient quantity of diluted molasses is added to the mixture, which is m so as to obtain a homogeneous appy mass to be moulded under a relative y light pressure or a we mass to be applied in a thin layer upon the timber, insulate.
The above composition can be varied in many respects as for the kind and the proportions of the filling and binding materials used in admixture with bark.
E. g. the infusorial earth can in many cases be dispensed with so that the admixture consists only of cement and molasses.
Further the more expensive Portland cement can be substituted by brick dust and sand.
Also many other fi 1n taken into account, whi e molasses may be substituted by other organic binding sub stances. According to the properties of the matters used in admixture with the bark the final products obtained will be lighter or heavier.
I As referred to above the products prepared according to the invention are highly recommendable for insulating any wood metal or other construction and making it incombustible by covering it with a thin superficial layer of the new material. Besides, it has been found of extreme economical importance for all building purposes, such as walls, floors, roofing, etc.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and the manner in which it is to be performed what I claim as new and wish to secure Ry Letters Patent is:
1. bustible and insulating material consisting in mixing pulverized bark of the djatti tree with a bmding material.
2. A process of preparin an incombustible and insulating material consisting in mixing pulverized bark of the djatti tree y mixe in dry iron or other construction to 70 ma erlals may Be process of preparing an incombustible and insulatin material consisting 5 in mixin cork-free pu verized bark of trees with a fi material inc F substance and with a binding uding molasses. process of preparing an incombustible and insulating material consisting in mixing cork-free pulverized bark of trees with Portland cement, infusorial earth and diluted molasses, said bark, cement and infusorial earth being mixed in the proportion of 1:2: parts in weight.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
7 BERGSMA.
