*I T lll whom tia-nay concer/n:-
vBe. it lmown that JOHN PAUL Hisn, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Hightown, in the county of Highland and'State '5 of Virginia, has invented new and useful Improvements in Flash-Light Attachments for Guns and Object Indicators, of which the following isa specification.
' It is the purpose of the present invention to provide, in` 'a device of the present character, -a construction including means of adi justment to ad-apt the flashlight for long and short range, both with relation to the diameter of the light area and the angular direc- 16 tion with re erence to the gun barrel. vAnother purpose isv to provide, in a ilashlight, a constructionv for projecting a spot.
I light, the casing of the flashlight being mounted in a guide tube which includes a 2 lens at its outer end, so constructed that by adjusting the casing of the flashlight, the' -diameter of the spotlight area may be varied.
Still another purpose is to provide, in a ilashlight attachment vfor guns, means for holding the flashlight casing in different adjusted positions in the lguide tube so as to prevent the flashlight casing from movement l toward the stock of the gun when thegun is raised closely approximating a perpendicunr position.,
A further purpose retaining a switch-button epressed to mainftain the circuit closed and' the ashlight `illuminated while the gun is in use, there also being means to permit the switch-button to be released to open the circuit fon extinguishing the flashlight.
. A. still furthe-gurpose is the provision 0f means to be att ed to or adjacent any obn 'ect, preferabl on the rear end of the'flash- '-ght casing, hr thepurpose of indicating i 'the location of the object in the dark. This means lcomprises a stationary member and a f 1 means for vsecuring these members together and `including means to secure the members 'to theobjectto belocated. I#
is to rovide means forv member, the former having. any, Suitable wording, such as Here I am, Let- :[tis tobe `understood that the particulars herein given are in no way limitative and that, while still 'keepj Vwithin the scope of the invention, any desired modications of 'detail and desired proportions may be made in .theapparatus according to the circumstances.
The invention comprises further features `ard' combinations of .parts to be hereinafter se claimed.
In the drawings: Figure L is a view in side elevation of a gun, showin the improved flashlight attachment em ying the invention applied 1n an operative position.

Figu of Figure 8. l
Referring rto the drawings, 1 designates a tubular guide provided with means for attachment to the barrel 2 of a sporting rifle or other firearm and mounted in the guide is a lighting unit or flashlight proper 3 which 1s removably itted in place. The flashlight casing may have sliding movement in a direction substantially parallel movable to expose re 9 `1s a sectional view on line 9 9.

` The battery is mounted inthe 1n other Words, the forward end of the guide is provided with a lens 4 which is dat on its exterior face and convex on its interior face. The end ofthe flashlight casing has a lens 5 which is concavo-convex, the convexity of the lens facing the lens of the ide tube While the concavit faces invvar ly of the flashlight casing. bviously, when the flashlight casing is adjusted slidably in the guide, the two lenses cooperate for creating a change in the light rays for the purpose of varying the diameter of the areaof the Spot- The ashlight casing to the rear of the lens 5 has a distance redector 6 including an electric light bulb 7, and also mounted in the flashlight casin is a battery 8, the end of which has a yiel in tongue 9 controlled by apush-button 10 ot which the outer eX- tremity proy'ects beyond the outer surface of the flashlight casing. The tubular guide has an elongated slot 11 in which the pushbutton 10 engages. @ne end of the iashlight casing has a terminal knob 12 which aligns with the push-button and also engages/through the slot 1'1. lt is possible to grasp the knob 12 and move the ashlight casing longitudinally through the tubular guide for the purpose et positioning the same in order to vary the diameter of the area of the spotlight. One"edge of fthe slot is providedwith a plurality'of teeth 13 with which the terminal knob may engage for holdingthe flashli ht casing in different positions in the tu ular guide, especially when the gun is disposed approximating a perpendicular position.
The opposite edges of the slot at a suitable location between its ends have semicircular recesses which are, owing to their opposite positions, of a diameter a trifle larger than the head of the push-button 10. In fact, these recesses constitute an opening 14 to permit of the head of thel usb-button passing therethrough, that-is, W en the button is depressed. When the button is depressed and the flashlight casin moved longitudinally in the tubular guide so as to dispose the head out of registration with the opening, the yielding ton ue 9 will be depressed and its terminalwil contact with the base of the electric light bulb and thereby close the circuit and cause the bulb to light. As long as the push-button is held depressed, owing to the inner surface of the guide tube immediatel adjacent the' slot engaging with the hea of the button, the yielding ton e will remain in contact `With the base of t e electric light bulb.
liashlight casing and by means of a spring 15 one end of fthe battery' is held in contact with an .cial forms of flashlights, is of tubular construction as shown.
The flashlight may be easily removed from the tubular guide andV used independently of the gun for purposes other than locatingv the obv'ect aimed at, when used in connection with t e gun.
The tubular guide is rovided with iront and rear clamps 17 an 18 for engagement with the gun barrel and adapted to be Secured thereto in embracing relation theren with, as shown, the rear clamp having connection with a suA portin block 19 with which is associated) an adjusting element, such as a screw 20, which serves as a means of varying the angular position of the guide with relation to the axis of the gun barrel to cause a convergence upon a point at the range or" the proposed shot, to t e end that the axis of the gun barrel may be directed at about the center of the light area pro jected by the light unit upon the object at which the barrel is aimed.
ln order that the flashlight may be discerned in the dark, either when it is removed from the tubular guide and used separately therefrom or when inserted in the guide, a location indicator 22 is applied' to one end of the ashlight casing. This indicator, 'While preferably used on a flashlight carried by a gun, may be used upon or adjacent any object, either adjacent a push-button, a
depending electric light bulb, door knob,
the slot in a mail box or adjacent a license number plate on an automobile or close to any object, so that the object is discernible in the dark.
This signahin its preferred form, comif prises two disks 23 and 24e `which are riveted together concentrically by means oi an eyelet 25. The disk 28 remains substantially stationary while the other disk 2e (Whic is of segmental shape) is rotatably movable and is provided with diametrically opposite lugs or projections 26 with which the ngers may engage for the purpose of rotating the se mental disk.
he stationary disk has applied to one tace thereof, in a circular direction, a sign or indication, such as the words Here l am, Letter box, or the like made in phosphorus, so thanJ such indications are discernible in the dark. The surface ot' the disk containing this design may have a coating of White shellac or varnish or any other suitable material that will adhere to the surface and yet permit the sign to approvided for the purpose of preserving and rendering, the sign durable.
The rotating disk has a segmental cutaway portion 27 which conforms to the contour of the sign so that when this cut-away portion is positioned adjacent the sign, the sign is exposed. However, by grasplng they lugs or ears 26, the segmental` disknmay be rotated for the purpose of covering the sign.
A nail, screw or other fastening means 28- mayA pass through the opening in the eyelet adjacent' any object which will render the object discernible in the dark.
Again referring to the ,flashlight', it will be noted that the tubular guide 1 is substantially as long as the flashlight itself which may be moved a short distance in either direction, which will act to make the movable tu v v ythe -fact thatboth tubes 29 and 31* are i split. However, 'the inner tube 29* is providli ht as large or as small as may be desired.
n Figure 7 therel is disclosed a modified structure of location indicator which comprises a tube 29 to bemounted upon a cord 30 of an electric 1i ht bulb, that is, immediately above the bulb socket. The lower end of this tube, as shown at a in Figure-7, is provided with a band of luminous paint preferably in the form of a coating of phosphorescentmaterial. It is obvious that* the entire .circumference of thev tube 29 may be provided witha phosphorous or luminous paint coloring..l A second tube 31 telescopes the first tube and is pgovided with a pair of ears 32 which may tric light bulb maybe located in the dark.
It 1s obvious that the tube 31 may be mounted stationary and the tube 29 movable without departing from the princi le yof the4 modified construction. Upon reflerring'to Figures 8 and 9, itwill be seen that such a construction is obvious for the reason that an exterior tubing 31"A is lmounted upon the cord immediately above the lamp socket, and arran ed interiorly of this tube is a 29.- Figure 9 clearly discloses ed with a pairof' ears 32* which extend in parallelism between-thesplit edges of the tube 31. l z v The inner tube 29s capable .of expansion.v
.For instance, byA grasping the two ears 3251 the inner .tube mayA be contracted, allowing grasped for'moving 4the tube31 to exposethe luminous paint or `phosphorous coloring vin order that the elec- -ride under the op osite e Ihold the switch c osed. v In `testimony* whereof he aivxes his signal positions due to the friction.
