Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Josnrrr Marys, a citizen of Russia, resident of East Brimfield, county of Hampden, and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Searchlight-Firearms, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in combined pistols and flash lights "for illuminating a target, thereby materially assisting in the aim of the pistol.

The principal object of the invention is to combine with a gun ot' the type described, a flashlight by means of which light rays may be directed toward the target automatically, the same being under control of the operator holding the gun.

These and other like objects are attained. by the novel construction and combination of parts hereafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a revolver of conventional type and indicating the application of the invention.

Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the same, parts being broken away to show the construction.

As before indicated, the attachment is adapted to be applied to small arms of the explosive type illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, and 8, in which a revolver body, 10, having the usual barrel 11 and sights 12 are indicated, the cylinder 14 being actuated by the trigger 15, partially in the encircling guard 16, and having a handle 17, all the foregoing parts being of the conventional type.

As shown in Fig. 2, an appropriate opening is made in the front part of the body 10, below the barrel 11, the opening containing the convolutions of a square double lead thread 18, with which are engaged pins 19,

formed with a cylindrical socket 20, in the outer end 21 of which is inserted a lens 28, the same constituting a lamp, the filaments of which are contained within the casing 21, and from which extends one of the terminal wires 24, the other wire 25 making contact with the interior of the pistol body.

Contained in the hollow handle 17 is a battery 28, the same being held therein by springs 29 and 30, one of the terminals 32 of the battery being directly engaged with the body 10 of the pistol while the other terminal 33 extends into a space formed in the body in alinement with the contact 34, secured to the insulating block 35, one end of the contact engaging with the transmission wire 37, the same being covered by proper insulating material and extending through the body 10 toward the front, where its projection 38 makes contact with the terminal 24 of the flash light which is directed toward the muzzle of the pistol.

A push-button 40 is inserted through the inner side of the hollow handle 10, and forced normally outward by engagement with the spring contact 34, and so arranged that as the button or knob 40 is pressed inwardly, it makes contact with the terminal 33, thereby forming a complete circuit between the lamp 21 and battery 28.

In order to provide means whereby the battery 28 may be inserted or removed at any time as when it is desired to renew the same, a removable cover plate 42 is attached to the open end of the revolver hilt, the cover having at one end an upstanding,

hook shaped element 43, adapted to clip into engagement with a fiat spring 44, rigidly secured within the handle, while at the 0pposite end of a pair of lugs 46, having semicircular recesses 45 on the outer side are engaged by the enlarged diameters 47 of a pin 48, pressed normally outward by a spiral push spring 49, in such manner that by moving the pin 48 inwardly the lugs are released and the cover plate may be removed.

In the adaptation shown in Fig. 8 a sliding push button 50 is inserted through the side of the handle 17, the same being operated in a slot 51, and may be readily moved therein by the fingers so as to maintain the battery in constant engagement with the flashlight, so that a glow may be maintained so long as desired, while in the preferred form, light obviously will glow only when. the push button 40 is depressed.

From the foregoing, it will be seen that a practical and eflicient device has been described, which, if the gun is to be used in the dark, is of material assistance in properl aiming the same.

aving thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a device of the character described, in combination, a pistol handle formed hollow throughout and open at its outer end, a lug projecting horizontally within said hollow handle, a pair of springs secured in said hollow handle and formed with yieldable projections at their lower ends, a battery supported upon the projections of said springs, a spring finger carried by said bat tery and engageable with said lugs, the wall of said handle having a slot, a pair of normally separated contact springs secured respectively to the inner wall of said handle and to said battery and a push button held projected out of said slot by one of said springs.

2. In a device of the character described, in combination, a hollow handle, open at its lower end, a spring finger secured to the inner wall of said hollow handle, a cap adapted to engage the edge of said hollow handle, a detent carried by said cap at one end adapted to engage said spring finger, a pair of hook members carried by said handle at its opposite end and a pin mounted in said hook members, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
