ncense.
Application f led March 24, 1924. Serial No. 701,488.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BEEGHER FRANK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Leggings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in leggings, particularly to that type designed for use 1n and about found'riesand the like where the wearers legs are exposed to intense heat.
It has heretofore been impossible to induce the operators to wear leggings aroundthese places because the construction was such as to render them extremely uncomfortable and furthermore the steel fastening means soon became heated and consequently were injurious to the wearer. V I
It is the primary objectof this in'ventio to so design a legging that it will'be adjust-' able to the wea-rers legs and may be com fortably worn,,and to eliminate steel or other metallic stays etc. 7 p
It is likewise an object to provide fastening means for a legging which may beeasily manipulated forapplication and removal of the legging.
Other objects will bein part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.
In order that the invention and its mode of operation may be readily understood by persons skilled in the art, I have in the accompanying illustrative drawings, and in the following detailed decri'ption based thereon set out one possible embodiment of the same. Fig. 1. is a plan view of a legging con structed in accordance with this invention. 'Fig. 2. is aside elevation showing the legging substantially in the position assumed when upon the wearers leg;
Fig. 3. is a View showing the manner in which the edges overlap and the relative to its lower end and substantially midway its width an instep covering portion 6, As
is apparent, in this construction a portion of the lower end of the-body 5 1s cut away,
and to the edge of this cut away portion the instep covering member 6 is stitched or legging will snugly fit about the wearers ankles. As shown in the several figures, vertically extended pockets 7 are formed upon the inner forward portion of the body for the purpose of receiving stiffening-members whereby to give shape to the legging.
At one vertical side of the legging the material is folded upon itself. and stitched in a manner to form a pocket 8, which as shown converges downwardly and is adapted for the reception of a fastening strip or stay 9 made up of fibre or the like material.- This member is so made as to absorb a minimum amount of heat and to offer the least resistance to the various movements of the wearer. The resultis that an unusual degree of comfort is afforded the. user. Immediately above the upper end of the fastening element 9 is an extension or tongue which as shown carries one portion 11 of a separable fastener.
Arranged at spaced points near the edge of the legging opposite the aforesaid tongue 10 is a set of fastening elements 12 which obviously are in the form of-portions o-f separable fasteners adapted to coact with the other portion 11.
Arranged upon the outer side of the body portion 5 and at a point opposite the ex tended end of the fastening strip 9, is a set of spaced pockets 13 which are formed throu h stitching to this body portion a short length of material. I
In attaching thls legging to the leg of an operator the body portion is first positioned about the leg; the lower orextended end of the fastening strip 9 is inserted into one of the pockets 13, and the portion 11 of the separable fastener is then engagedwith one of the other portions 12.. At this point the legging is securely attached to the leg of the wearer and he is assured of comfort due to the yieldability of'the fastening strip or stay 9, and the stiffening members 7. As heretoforestated this legging as now constructed is capable of adjustment to legs of different sizes and furthermore includes no metal pieces and stays which would be quickly heated and consequently injure the operator.
Manifestly certain minor changes in some details of construction may be resorted to as will fall Within the scope of the appended claim and these changes I consider within the spirit of my invention.
I claim:
A legging formed of fire proof material and comprising a body portion having vertical edges designed to be overlapped, one
edge portion being shorter than the remaining body portion and having a vertical tapering pocket, a tapered stay arranged in said pocket and extending therebelow, a tongue formed at the upper end adjacent the pocket, snap fasteners carried by said tongue and adjacent portions or the legging to permit adjustment to the leg of a wearer, a set of circumferentially spaced vertical loops arranged to receive the lower end of the stay to secure the lower portion of the legging together, and an in-step covering port-ion carried bv the legging.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature.
VBEEOHER FRANK.
