`Be it known that I, DON W. Sorranrrna, a citizen of the United States, residing/at Dayton, in thev county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Shores, of which the following-isa speciication,reference being had thereln toY the accompanying drawing. 0'
My invention relates to adjustable shores and similar structures. l
Itis the object of my invention to provlde a cheap, strong and easily adjusted shore which can be operated in restricted locations by labor of littleJ skill. Y
It is a further object of my invention to provide a shore that has a'minimum of adjustments, that will not permit the supported member to twist on the supporting mem- 20 ber, and which will positively grip the? supported member.
It is a further object-of my invention to provide an adjustable shore having a coarse adjustment and a fine adjustment.
It is an additional object to provide a selfaligning` adjustable shore which will insure the application of the weight on the several parts on a straight line, thus preventing bending or other stresses or strains belng set up in thestructure.

' Referring to the drawings, 1 is a body to be supportedsuch as a beam. This beam isv engaged by a cap member consisting of a bottom'plate 2, side plates 3,.supporting buttresses 4, and a positioning rlng 5. This ring 5 fits on the top of the ,supported column 6 which is usually 'a pipe. This pipe 6 is to the drawings, Figure 1 is a' adapted to telescope within' a supporting column or pipe 7 and within the cap member 8'which is mounted on the supporting member. This cap member also is provided with a ring 9 and a reenforcing buttress 10. On top -of thering 8 is mounted a positioning lug 11 which is on the top thereof. Along the outer edge is a shoulder 12. Within lthe shoulder is a cutaway portion 13, either end of which is bordered by a wall 14. Thiscutaway portion 13 is open on the side towards the supported column 6. 13 is substantially rectangular and gis adapted to receive the nose 15 of the locking ring 16.
This locking ring consists of a nose 15. which"hasa rounded surface 17 and a ring 16. The ring itself has an interior opening in the shape of an ellipse. The half of the opening on the upper edge of the ring towards the supporting or positioning lug is adapted to engage with half of the supported member 6 at anangle to the vertical axis thereof. This engaging edge is designated 18. The other half of the supported column 6 is en aged on 'the other side below` the plane o engagement on the side towards the positioning lug by the other half of the sharp edge on the yring which is desi ated 19. This sharp edge is in a plane su stantially parallel to* the plane of the sharp edge 18 and below it. The ring itself ares away from this sharp edge on this half of the ring in faces 2Oy and 21 which terminate in, the upper edges 22 and lower edge 23 respectively. This side of the ring parries the handle 24.
The nose-15 consists of a broad strai ht member providing a bearing surface' t at will not allow the ring to rock about its transverse axis nor to readily move abouti its vertical axis as 15 engages. snugly within the walls 12 .and 14. d Q
The ring is so arranged thatgwhen in locked posltion its upper surface is Iapproximately inclined at an angle of '25' -from the .95 horizontal plane, but the handle Lis located -in the horizontal plane so that it ma be readily grasped for final-locking or un ooking of the several parts to one anotheny Th? Adjacent edges are so arranged that these edges may be re-sharpened without destroyingthe edectlveness of the rin I practice, the general adjustment of the parts is secured by placing the supported member within the supporting member and the parts locked to one another by locking the clamping ring upon the supported member, while its nose rests on the positioning lu Ilo the fine adjustment of the elevation of the supported member I provide a telescop- .ing screw 25 at the base of the supporting column. The head of-this screw 26 carries a plate 27 which loosely guides it within the supporting column while the face of the supporting column at 28 rests upon the ring 29 having eyes 30. This ring is internally threaded at 31 to engage with the threads 32 on the worm 25. Thus, as the ring 29 is rotated on the screw 25, the height of the suplporting column 7 will be adjusted gradual Iiil order to insure the alignment of the parts as nearly as possible on the vertical axisthe end of the worm is provided with a ball 33 -which lits within the socket34 carried by the broad base plate 35 so that this universal joint provides an aligning member to accommodate differences in adjustment of the parts.
Thus the several parts may be put into position and locked and then be aligned and adjusted as to height.
While I have shown and described certain features as constituting my invention, it.
lwill be understood that parts have been shown for purposes of illustration only, and that I do not care to be limited to such details, as obvious modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art.,
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination, with a pair of relatively longitudinal adjustable members, one having a supporting shoulder provided with a recess, a gripping ring having an opening therein adapted to freely accommodate the other of said members therein and having a ball-headed nose adaptedto engage and to be seated in the recess in said shoulder and l gripping edges on the interior ofsaid opening oppositely disposed,'adapted to engage respective halves of the member extending therethrough whereby said members are supported in adjusted positions when said gripping ring is inclined at an angle thereto, and` a handle integral with said gripping ring.
2. In combination," in a locking ring, of a positioning and supporting portion, a handle portion and interiorly disposed engaging each other on the ring.
3. In combination with a pair of relatively extensible inner and outer members, one having an `abutment on its inner end portion, of a gripping and locking device bearing against the abutment and having an opening therein through which the outer of said members extends, said gripping member being in an inclined position when gripping the outer member, merging surfaces forming gripping edges on the inside of said openingand arranged at angles relatively to the axis of said members and adapted to gri the outer member, a projection rigid on sai device to engage and -bear against said abutment, whereby the gripping device is maintained in position and said outer member is locked in adjusted position, when endwise pressure is exerted on' said members, or when said gripping edges of said device are moved in engagement with the member adjacent thereto.
4. In combination with a pair of relatively extensible members, one having an abutment at its inner end provided with a recess therein, of a ring, a supporting and positioning projection located on one edge of said ring on a tangent thereto and having a laterally extending nose adapted to rest in said recess, a handle attached to said ring, and gripping edges on the interior of the ring.
5. In combination, a supporting member, a supported member, a positioning lug on said supporting member and having a recess therein, a locking ring adapted to engage the supported member, a positioning and sup#- porting projection on said locking ring and having a laterally extending nose engaging the positioning lug in said recess, and a handle on said ring.
6.v In combination, a supporting member and a supported member arranged in telesooping relation, a supporting ring on the acent engaging provided with gripping edges on the interior thereof to engage the supported member, one of said gripping edges enga lng the supported member at a diiierent p ane than the opposite gripping edge.
7. In combination, a supporting member, a supported member, a positioning lug on said supporting member, a locking ring adapted to engage the supported member, a
