v R. T. STEVENS FlNIsHING WELT Original Filed March 22. 1921 Patented ug. 25", 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT T. STEVENS, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, A-SSIG-NOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO WOODWABD & COCKEY MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A
CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
FINISHING WELT.
Application filed March 22, 1921, Serial No. 454,541. Renewed June 26, 1925.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that ROBERT T. S'rnvnNs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Detroit, county of Wayne, and State of Michigan, has invented an Improvement in Finishing Welts, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to finishing welts and, among other objects, is intended to provide a simple construction presenting an especially finished appearance.
One illustrative embodiment of my invention is shown in the accompanying drawings in which Fig. l is a face view of the improved welt.
Fig. 2 is 1an enlarged sectional elevation of the welt in open position ready to receive the fastening means.
Fig. 3 isl an enlargedsectional elevation taken as indicated by the line 3 3 of Fig. l, and illustrates one means of fastening the welt to its support and the manner of concealing the fastening means.
Referring to the drawings, a base portion 5 receives fastening means for instance, tacks 6, by which the welt is secured lto its support. Along the edges of the base portion 5, beads 7 are formed, by placing fillers 8 within loops formed from. the body material of the base and closed by the lines of stitches 9 and 10.
To conceal the fastening means :and to protect the stitches, a finishing bead 1l is provided by looping the body material about a filler 12 and securing the ends of the loop together, as by the line of stitches 9 already referred to. In this manner the finishing bead is hinged to the base portion It will be noted that the illustra-tive body material is in one piece, so folded as to form the loops for the several fillers, and stitched to hold the fillers in place and form a hinge for the auxiliary bead 11. One edge of the body material is concealed within one of said loops while the opposite edge, and also all of the stitches, are concealed by the finishing bead 11 when the latter loccupies the position shown in Figs. l :and 3. Thus all edges of the material and all stitches may be concealed and protected.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
l. As a new article of manufacture, a finishing welt comprising in combination a strip of fabric constructed and arranged to form a base having spaced rounded beads formed along the eFgestiieifaidwciistituting round base edges, said base being fiat between said edge bead and arranged to receive fastening devices; a line of stitches inside each edge bead; a fabric covered finishing bea-'d between said edge beads and covering the fiat base portion between said edge beads; one of said line of stitches serving to secure the fabric around said finishing bead and the corresponding edge bead and arranged to cooperate with saidkfabric to hinge said finishing bead to said base, whereby the resilient character' of said fabric tends to hold said finishing bead against said base; the other edge of said finishing bead being free to permit it to be raised to uncover said base.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a finishing welt comprising in combination a base formed of fabric and provided with fabric covered beads along the outer edges thereof and constituting cnrved base edges; said base being arranged to receive fastening devices between the said edge beads; a fabric covered finishing bead between said edge beads and covering the base between said edge beads; a. line of stitches through said fabric inside an edge bead and arranged to secure the fabric around said finishing bead and said edge bead and serving to hinge said finishing bead to said base; said fabric and line of stitches cooperating to hold said finishing bead in position to cover said base; the opposite edge of said finishing bead being free to permit said bead to be raised to gainl Certificate of Correction.
It is hereby certified that the assignee in Letters Patent No. 1,551,071, granted August, 25, 1925, upon the application oRobe-it T. Stevens, of Detroit, Michigan, for an improvement in Finishing VVeltsl, was erroneously described and specified as vWoodward & Coekey Manufacturing; Company, Whereas said assignee should have been described and specified as Woodward (fr Uooheg/ Manufacturing Uompam as shown by the records of assignments in this oiice; and that the said Letters Patent should be read With this correction therein that the same may contorni to the record of the case in the Patent Office. y
Signed and sealed this 3d day of November, A. D. 1925.
