UNITED STATES ARTHUR J. TURCOTIE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
. eeann PATENT orricn.
LIMB REST.
Application filed July a7, 1922, Serial No. 577,919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR J. TURCOTTE, a citizen of Canada, and resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Limb Rests, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to leg and foot rests in general, and particularly to a kind which may be employed individually at any place and may be easily carried about.
The prime objects of my invention are to provide a simple inexpensive and easily operable article of this kind which is collapsible and which may be adjusted to any desired position when in operation, and which.
may be rocked toward or from the user when desired.
Another object of my invention is to pro vide within such device, suitable means for resting the legs, so arranged as to be adjustable to any desired position.
Another object of my invention is to provide a foldable base in connection with my device also adapted to be adjusted to any desired position, and to permit the free movement of the leg support.
Another object of my invention is to provide in connection with my device adjustable, disappearing bracing means.
Another object of my invention is to provide for the parts which are adapted to swing out of the frame, locking means arranged to keep these parts within the frame when folded.
The foregoing and other objects will be more fully apparent from the following description, and the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my device in operative position.
Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view taken on line 22 of Fig. 1, showing my device in folded position.
Referring to the drawings, numeral 10 denotes the base member, composed of long sides 11 and 12, and short sides 13 and 14. Base member 10 is hingedly connected with frame member 15, composed of uprights 16 and an upper end bar 17 The base member is hingedly connected with the lower ends of the uprights 17 by means of a connecting rod 18 passing through the center of long sides 11 and 12 of the base member.
Connecting the center portion of bars 16 Renewed July 6, 1925.
is a stationary foot brace 19, below which is hingedly connected the leg rest 20, which may swing into the frame in the manner indicated by broken lines. Similarly one half of the base member 10 may swing into the frame 15.
Provided at the end bar 17 there is a spring operated locking device indicated at 21 which registers with and is adapted to engage the female portion 22 of the locking device attached to leg rest 20.
A similar locking device is provided in one of the uprights 16, as indicated at 23 and registers with an aperture 24 provided in the long side 11 of base member 10.
Hingedly associated at 25 with the leg support 20 is an adjustable brace 26 provided with a plurality of teeth 27 adapted to engage the pin of locking device 23. By changing the position of brace 26 relative to the pin, the position of leg support 20' may be adjusted.
A single brace 28 is hingedly connected at 29 with long side 11 of base member 10, and is also provided with a plurality of teeth 30 adapted to engage a corresponding pin provided within the frame at upright 16. When it is desired to hold the frame 15 at a certain incline relative to the base member 10, brace 28 is caused to engage the pin in the frame.
When, however, it is desired to rock the frame as indicated by arrows I and II, (when for instance the user is sitting in a rocking chair) brace 28 is disengaged and folded into the recess 31, provided in base member 10.
The application of my device is obviously universal and may be used while sitting in a chair or in any other resting commodity. It may be folded up without taking up unnecessary space; and may be carried about since it is very light to handle and easily adjusted to any desired position. My device serves not only for a foot and leg rest, but also as a support for any other article, or as a step to facilitate handling of articles normally out of our reach.
WVhile I have shown a specific construction of my device, and particularly a specific de' sign of the braces 26 and 28, be it understood that various changes and improvements may be made without departing from the broad scope of my invention, for which I claim:
A folding limb rest comprising a rectangular, closed frame, a leg support hinged.
Within and adapted to fold into the upper 7' portion of said frame, a base member hingedly connected at the lower end of said frame and adapted to fold thereinto, a fgot 5 brace dis gosedioetween and conneotingtlie for positioning said frame relative to said base member, the latter means adapted to be placed in inoperative position When said frame is to swivel relative to said base member.
Signed at New York in the county of New York and State of New York this 21 day of July A. D. 1922.
