NITED STATES PATIENT OFFICE.
FOSTER w. GATSSETT AND JAMEsH. BELSER, OF MARLBOROUGH, MASSA- OHUSETTS, ASSIGNORS or ONE-THIRD THEIR RIGHT TO FRANK A.
MARSHALL, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN HOSE-NOZZLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,020, dated September 15, 1874; application filed July 25, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FOSTER W. GASSETT and JAMES H. BELSER, of Marlborough, in the county of Middlcsex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Hose-Nozzles; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a representation of a plan view of our hose-nozzle. Fig. 2 is a sectional view, and Fig. 3 is a side view, of the same.
This invention has relation to hose-nozzles; and the novelty consists in the novel construction and arrangement of the various parts, as will be hereinafter more fully explained and claimed. 1
In the annexed drawings, A designates a hollow cylindrical nozzle-box, having through its peripheral walls a slot, at, and upon the unslotted portion thereof screw-threaded tubular projections or nipples b 12 upon which are screwed nozzles E and F. These nipples are, preferably, cast with the nozzle-box, but may be secured thereto, or dispensed with altogether, when the nozzles will be screwed directly into the box, and the said nozzles may be of various sizes and shapes. I'have caused to be shown in the drawings two nozzles, E F, only, as being used in connection with my improvement; but I may use a greater number, if it should prove desirable. B designates the coupling of a set section of hose, 0, which is provided with a screwthrea'ded nipple, by means of which it is at.- tached to the entry-port b of a hollow cylindrical valve, G, which is applied within the hollow of the cylindrical nozzle-box A, and which is provided with an exit-port, I), through which water is allowed to pass when. it is caused to register with the exit-holes of either of the nozzles E and F. This coupling part of the hose 0 is passed through the slot at of the nozzle-box A, and is then screwed into the entry-port b of the valve G.
If the hose-pipe be held firmly in the right hand, the nozzle-box A may be caused to rotate with the left, for the purpose of changing the flow of water from a nozzle of one to one of another-as, for example, from the round to the flat nozzle, or the reverse.
The valve G is inserted into thenozzle-box A by means of an open end thereof, which is then closed by a suitable screw-cap. e e designate notches, which are cut into the solid end of the nozzle-box A in a line with the longer extended axes of the nozzles F E, and which serve, when they are engaged with the catch D, having its fulcrum in standards upon the coupling B, to prevent a casual displacement of the nozzle-box, whereby the exit-port of the valve would be closed by an imperforate portion of the periphery of the nozzle-box A, and the flow of water interrupted or allowed to find an exit through a nozzle other than that suited to the purposes of the pipeman.
With a View to preserving this engagement, I have used a spring, '5, which, by keeping the power end of the lever-catch D raised, also keeps the other end engaged with the notches.
It will be seen from the above description that I have invented a most useful and convenient nozzle, whereby I am enabled to throw a solid stream, which I may change, by rotating the nozzle-box, into a broadly-spread sheet of water, or one performing the functions produced by an ordinary garden-sprinkler, and this 'by merely changing the exit-port of the valve to a nozzle producing the desired stream, without screwing on a new nozzle, and without interrupting the flow of water through the feed-pipe; also, that, by means of the springcatch, the valve may be held to produce a given stream as long as may be desired.
The nozzle F is provided with a flattened aperture, f, allowing water to be thrown therefrom in a solid flat stream, which will be found most useful in throwing, in a fan-like form, a mass of water upon goods burning upon the shelves of a store, as, unlike a sprinkler, the parts of water will not be so disseminated as to be of non-effect, but will be of sufficient density to' produce an extinguishing effect upon the burning mass.
difi'erentlyrsizcd nozzles E and. F, constructed and operated as specified. l
In testimony that we claim the above we have hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of two witnesses.
