UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.Y
EDWARD M. STEPHENSON, OF WEST HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR T THE STEPHENSON SPECIALTY CO., OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION.
TELEPHONE PAD.
Application filed December 26, 1924. Serial No. 757,987.
T0 all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD M. STEPHENn soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Telephone Pads; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in
Fig. 1, a plan view of a telephone pad constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2, an edge view of the same. Fig. 3, a transverse, sectional view, with the recesses closed.
Fig. 4, a similar view, with the covers for the recesses in their open positions.
This invention relates to improvement in telephone pads, or devices on which a telephone may rest, the object being to provide an index and a pad and pencil which will always be in convenient position for use, and a further object is to provide a cover for a telephone directory, and the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a base 10 of heavy cardboard, wood, or other suitable material, covered with paper, cloth,
leather, or other suitable material, and in the base I form a recess 11, on one side of the center, and a corresponding recess 12 on the opposite side. These recesses are closed by hinged covers 13 and 14, and turn-buttons 15 may be provided to hold the covers in their closed positions. FleXibly connected with the base is a bottom-board 16, to provide a space beneath the pad for the reception of a telephone directory., which may be held in place by a cord 17, or otherwise. memorandum pad 18, and the cover is thrown upward when released by a spring 19, the end of which is coiled to provide a The recess 11 provides space for a.
holder' for a pencil 20. In the recess 12 is a horizontal spring-arm 21, over which index cards 22 may be placed, so that, when the cover 14 is raised, the cards will be lifted up by the spring, so as to be in convenient position for examination.A
The device forms a pad for a desk telephone, and the covers may be held in the closed position by the weight of the telephone, which may be moved from front to rear, as desired. For instance, upon receiving a call, the telephone may be moved to the rear, which will permit the cover 14 to rise and expose a pad and pencil. On the other hand, when about to enter a call, the telephone may be moved forwardly, which releases the cover 13 and throws the index cards up in position for use.
I thus provide, in a very simple and compact form, a pad for a desk telephone which will be provided with an index for frequent calls, and a pad and pencil for making notes, and also provide a convenient place for a telephone directory. It is obvious that the telephone directory need not necessarily be inserted below the pad, in which case the pad will rest upon the bottom-board 16. The cover for the pad may be any color to harmonize with the color scheme of the room in which it is placed, so that it furnishes a pleasing addition to the surroundings.
I claim:
1. A telephone pad, provided on opposite sides of the center with recesses, hinged covers for those recesses, springs tending to open said covers when released, one of the said springs formed with a pencil-receiving eye and the other providing an arm for the reception of indeX cards.
2. A telephone pad, provided on opposite sides of the center with recesses, hinged covers for said recesses, springs adapted to open said covers when released, and a bottom flexibly connected at one edge with the corresponding edge of the pad.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification,
EDWARD M. STEPHENSON.
