PATENT OFFlfiE.
WINDSOR- N. CUBE 018 SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
EMBLEM JEVJ'ELRY.
Application filed June 15, 1922. Serial No. 568,468.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WINDSOR N. Gone, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have made a new and useful invention, to wit, Improvements in Emblem Jewelry; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, concise, and exact description of the same.
This invent-ion relates particularly to an ornamental type of ring to be worn on the fingers.
An object of the invention is to provide a ring mounting having a freely movable r setting therein, said setting being provided with decorations or symbols of a desirable character.
A still further object of the invention relates to a ring mounting having a movable setting therein provided with means for holding said setting in a relatively fixed position. Other objects and advantages will appear as this description progresses.
In this specification and the annexed drawings, the invention is illustrated in the form considered to be the best, but 1t is to be understood that the invention is not limited to such form, because it may be embodied in other forms; and it is also to be understood that in and by the claims following the description, it is desired to cover the invention in whatsoever form it may be embodied.
In the accompanying one sheet of drawings,
Fig. 1 represents a side elevation of a ring constructed in accordance with my in vention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation taken through Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a cross section taken through Fig. 1 on the line 3-3.
It is customary and conventional to design rings and ring mountings so as to hold the setting in a fixed and stationary position. My invention contemplates a ring or mounting 1 formed in the usual manner from any desired material. The top portion of the mounting is enlarged or provided with shoulders 2, each of which are on opposite sides of the opening 3 for holding and supporting a setting. The shoulders 2 are either engraved or formed in an artistic manner or have ornamental emblems or designs 4: secured thereon. The setting opening 3 preferably consists of a circular hole having a constricted or shouldered upper edge 5. The spherical or otherwise shaped gem 6 is adapted to be confined within the opening 3 against the shoulder 5 so that a portion thereof will project through the constricted neck of the said opening above the upper face of the ring mounting 1.
A ring 7 or other. equivalent means would be soldered, sweated or otherwise fixedly secured adjacent the bottom end of the setting opening 3 to prevent the gem from dropping from the said opening, yet permitting a free and unrestricted movement of the said gem within the mounting. The inte *ior of the mounting 1 has a pair of flat metal springs 9 and 10 securely mounted therein so that the free ends of said springs will contact with the under exposed face of the gem 6 on opposite sides thereof and create a slight friction. Although the gem 6 is shown and described as a spherical object, itis to be understood that it would be clearly within the purview of this invention to shape the same in any other desired manner.
The spherical gem 6 may be formed of metal, precious or semi-precious stones, or of any other material, so that designs or emblems might be etched, lettered or engraved in spaced relation on the face thereof so that only one design or symbol would be visible when worn. The completed mounting with an appropriate gem, when worn by a member of any fraternal organization, would have the certain degrees or steps represented by symbols arranged on the face of the gem, whereby any desired symbol could be made visible.
Having thus described this invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. An article of jewelry comprising a sup porting member having a socket, a gem in the socket mounted to have universal rotative movement so as to enable a selected portion of the gem to be exposed relative to the socket and to conceal the remainder of the gem by the socket, and spring means engaging against the gem to hold same in predetermined position.
predetermined emblem, or to hold said emblem concealed 1n sald socket.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set 0 my hand at San Francisco, California, this 5th day of June 1922.
