SCREENING DEVICE.
Application filed April 13, 1923. Serial No. 631,870.

Be it known that I, JOHN TUoMnY, a citizen of the. United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough ot' Manhattan,l county and State of New York, have invented certain ne-w and useful Improvements in Screening Devices, of which the following is, a specification.
Thisk invention relates to an improved screening device for pumps and the like, and more particularly to devices of that character which are used in connection with the intake of the pump to prevent foreign matter in the liquid enteringthe pump casing and damaging` the mechanism.
It is the primary object and purpose of my present invention to. provide an improved means whereby such screens or strainers may be kept thoroughly clean and free from accumulatedV deposits of the foreign matter so that they will at all times function perfectly to prevent such foreign matter entering the pump while permittingl of the free and substantially unimpeded flow of the liquid.
In one practical embodiment of Vmy invention, I propose to accomplish the purpose above stated by providing two screens or straining members and alternately connecting these screens with the intake and discharge sides of a pump. whereby foreign matter in the liquid will be collected by one screen while the foreign matter previously Collected bythe other screen is removed therefrom and carried ofl" by the liquid flowing in the opposite direction from the discharge side of the pump.
lt is a `further lgeneral object of the invention to provide a device of the above character which is of simple and durable construction, not liable to get out of order and which can be manufactured at relatively small cost.
i `l/Vith, the Vabove and other objects in view the invention consists .in the improved combination and arrangement of the several parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, Y illustrated in the accompanying drawing' and subsequently incorporated in the subjoined claims.
In the drawing, I have illustrated a simple and practical embodiment. of the invention, the view thereof being); an elevation partly in section and showing' thev pump intake and discharge connections and the supply and final discharge connections.
Referring in detail to the drawing, I have shown in the present instance, two closed chambers 1 and 2 respectively, in each of which a screen 3 andf el respectively, is disposed substantially centrally thereof, thus dividing the chamber into two comparu ments.
The liquid enters the compartments at one side of the screens 3 and 4 through the supply connection 5 which is provided with branches connected to the respective chambers and 'having valves 9 and 10 respectively, whereby the supply of liquid to said chambers may be controlled. The chamber compartments at the opposite sides of the screens 3 and l are connected to the intake side of a pump (not shown) by the connection G also having' branches leading to the respective chambers and provided with the valves 7 and 8.
The discharge side of the pump is like wise connected with the chambers 1 and 2 on the same sides of the screens 3 and 4 as the intake connection by the branched connection 11 also provided with the control valves 12 and 13. y
The liquid is iin-ally discharged from the chambers 1 and 2 under the pressure of the pump through the connection 1G having branches connected to the saine ends of the chambers as the supply connection 5 and provided with the valves 14 and 15. t
In the operation of the device above described, when the valves 8, 10, 12 and 14 are closed and valves 7, 9, 13 and 15 are opened, the liquid being pumped passes from, the source of supply through the connection 5 and valve 9 into the chamber v1 and through screen 3 in said chamber upon which is re tained any foreign matter carried by the liquid which would be likely to cause injury to the pump mechanism. The liquid then flows from the chamber 1 past the valve. 7 and through the connection (5 to the intake of the pump. From the discharge side of the pump the liquid passes through the connection 11 past valve 13 and into the chamber 2 and through the screen -l in said chamber. The liquid in passingthrough this screen carries away any foreign matter which may have collected thereon and which passes ofi' with the liquid through valve l5 -and is discharged through the connection lll.
W'hen it is desired to clean the screen 3 in chamber 1, the How oi" the liquid 1s reversed and by opening the valves 8, 10, 12 and 14;
lll() lill and closing valves 7, 9, 13 and 15, the liquid being pumped then passes from supply connection 5 through valve l() into the chamber 2 and through the screen 4 which now catches any foreign matter in the liquid and prevents the same from passing to the pump. The liquid then enters the pump intake connection 6 through the openv valve 8. From the discharge side of the pump liquid passes through connection 11 and the open valve 12 into the screen chamber l and through the screen 3, carrying off the foreign matter previously collected by this screen and discharging the saine through valve 14E and connection 16. Thus it will be seen that the two screens can be kept thoroughly clean by simply reversing the fiow of the liquid through the chambers l and 2 so that the foreign matter may not accumulate upon the screens to such an extent that it would appreeiably impede the free flow of water to or from the pump.
llfhile, in view of the very simple character of the device above described, such construction is preferred, it is possible to accomplish the same purpose by means of other alternative structures. rThus, instead of having the screens fixed or stationary, these screens might be adjustably mounted so that they could be alternately positioned in connection with the intake and discharge sides of the pump, thus alternately cleaning one screen while the other serves to prevent the passage of foreign materials into the pump casing. Numerous other equivalent devices for that above particularly described may suggest themselves to one skilled in the art, whereby the purpose of my present improvements can be satisfactorily attained.
Accordingly, it is to be understood that l do not regard my invention asl necessarily limited to the arrangement herein illustrated and described, but reserve the privilege of adopting all such legitimate modifications in the form, proportion and relative arrangement of the several parts as may be fairly considered within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.

1. A screening device for pumps comprising two spaced relatively fined screens, connections between each of said screens leading` to the intake and to the exhaust of the pump on one side of the screens, connections for each screen leading to the supply and discharge for liquid on the opposite side of the screen from said pump connections, and means for alternately opening and closing said connect-ions with the screens of the intake and discharge sides of the pump and the liquid supply and discharge connections whereby foreign matter is collected by one screen from the liquid entering the pump while foreign matter previously collected by the other screen is removed therefrom and carried off by the liquid flowing in the opposite direction from the discharge side of the pump.
2. A screening device for pumps comprising two spaced relatively fixed screens, each connected on one side thereof with the intake and discharge sides of a pump, a supply connection and a final discharge connection with the opposite sides of said screens, and means for reversing the flow of liquid through said screens whereby foreign matter is collected by one screen from the liquid entering the pump while foreign matter previously collected by the other screen is removed therefrom and carried off by the liquid flowing in the opposite direction from the discharge side of the pump.
3. A screening device for pumps comprising two closed chambers each having a screen therein dividing the chamber into two compartments, pump intake and discharge connections each adapted to communicate with the corresponding con'ipartments of said chambers at one side of the respective screens, liquid supply and final discharge connections each adapted to communicate with the chamber compartments at the opposite sides of said screens, and valves interposedi in each of said connections for alternately reversing the iow of the liquid through said chambers whereby foreign matter is collected by the screen in one chamber from the liquid entering the pump while foreign matter previous-ly collected by the screen in the other pump is removed therefrom and carried olf by the liquid flowing in the opposite direction through the final discharge connection from the discharge side of the pump.
