lllllwl 3' INVEN Ton UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 22, 1906.
Application filed February 14, 1905. Serial No. 245,596.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL B. STEWART, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Filters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in filters; and theobject of my invention is the provision of a filter adapted to be attached to the usual spigot or supply-pipe under the pressure of the main of the waterworks and which will have a large capacity for filtering the water and which Wlll have means for cleaning the filter without removing it or detaching any of its parts, the mechanism embodying the simplest, cheapest, and most practical construction.
To attain the desired object, my invention consists of a filter embodyin novel features of construction and combination of parts substantially as disclosed herein.
Figure 1 represents a sectional view of my filter. Fig. 2 represents a top plan view of the cleaning device, and Fig. 3 represents an enlarged side elevation of the cleaning device detached.
In the drawings the letter H represents the shell or casing of my filter, which is supported upon a base H, and this casing is provided with the central discharge-op ening J for discharging the filtered material to the pipe N and with the inlet J, and upon the central pipe J is mounted the filtering-stone S, to the upper end of which pipe is connected or formed the stem M to receive the handle M. The casing is also provided with a flushing outlet-pipe O and with a small cook or faucet K. Mounted on the stem M and above the ends of the filtering-stone are the cross-heads A and B, to which are connected the side vertical strips G, and to one of said strips is secured the curved plates E, the inner or free ends of which are connected to the scrapingplate or cleaner C, which scraper is held normally in contact with the filtering-stone by means of the spring F, connected to each end of the scraper and always exerting their ten- .sion to hold the scraper in contact with the face of the filter-stone.
In operation the water enters the casing, passes through the filter-stone, and is discharged at the lower portion J through pipe N, and when desired to clean the filter-stone it is simply necessary to turn the crank which revolves the scraper against the surface of the stone and entirely removes all sediment or slime from the stone, and the water flushes and carries off such sediment or slime, as will be understood. It is evident that I provide a filter which will perform the function of filtering in a thorough manner and which can be quickly cleaned without in any manner affecting the interior mechanism.
I clairn In afilter, the combination With a casing, an inlet and an outlet near the top of said casing, said inlet and outlet provided with valves or cocks, a base portion upon which the casing rests having a central depending ring forming a chamber, a cap or covering for said chamber, a water-discharge pipe leading from said chamber, a flushing-outlet on one side of the base, a central discharge-pipe registering with said discharge-chamber, a stone rigidly mounted on said pipe, a stem rotatably mounted centrally in the top of the casing, a handle on said stem, a frame mounted on said stem and consisting of an upper and lower head or cross-piece having angular ends, flat vertical connecting-bars secured to said angular ends, a series of fiat segmental curved spring-arms having one end secured to the said vertical connecting-bars, an angle-bar connected to the free ends of said curved spring-arms, a vertical scraper-bar connected to one face of the angle-bar, and a pair of coiled springs each having one end connected to the scraperbar and their other ends connected to the upper and lower heads of the frame.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL B. STEWART.
