Application filed February 12, 1923. Serial No. 618,634.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID Rnis z, a citizen of .the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Game Apparatus, of, which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in game apparatus and more particularly to a combined checker and chess game apparatus embodying modifications and improvements having particular relation to the same art as disclosed in my pending ap lication for game apparatus, filed July 1 1922, and given Serial No. 575,532.
Anobject of the invention is to provide a game apparatus in which the game pieces are stored in a frame or frames which together with a backing sheet constitute a receptacleor receptacles having rigid relation to each other, and accommodating, a complete set of game pieces which are entirely exposed when the apparatus is open and-which are completely confined and securely housed when the apparatus is closed.
A further object is to provide a game apparatus of the character stated, which when folded will be relatively flat and compact so as to occu y but small spacein a traveling ba or in t e pocket of the user.
further objectis to provide a ame apparatus, which will be ornamenta and attractive in appearance, which will be complete, and which can be manufactured an sold at a reasonablylowprice.
A further object isto provide a game apparatus of the character stated, in which the glame pieces are supported in a frame or ames .of pro er size-and shape to nicely accommodate t e game pieces, and maintain all of the game pieces visible when the game apparatus is ready for play, so that they can be easily reached for removal or replace ment from their containers.
With these and other objects in view, the.
invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations, and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully.
hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.-
Inthe'accompanying drawings-- 4 F'gure 1 is 'a plan view illustrating one form of open position ready for play.
Figure 2 is a view of the same game apreduced scale.
my improved game apparatus in' 'paratus when folded, the view being on a Figure 3 is a view in transverse section on I the line 33, of Fi re 2 Figures 4, 5; 6, and 8, 9; are views in longitudinal and transverse sections respecrigid and inflexible, except at certain fold lines, or fold sections, indicated by the reference numerals 2, 3 and 4.
It will be notedthat these foldlines, or sections, extend transversely ofthe sheet- 1 and that there are no fold lines or sections longitudinally of the sheet. On the sheet 1, between the fold lines or sections 2 and 3, a pair of rigid frames 5 and 6-s. are fixedly secured and located end to end.
These frames 5 and 6 constitute receptacles or containers for game pieces 7, and
these game pieces 7 are preferably combined checker and chess game pieces, such as disclosed in my former application above referred to.
Each frame 5 and 6 is of the proper depth to accommodate the game pieces, and is of the proper area to accommodate all of the game-pieces of one set so that instoring the game pieces, all the game pieces of one set are stored in one frame, and all the game pieces of the other set in the other frame.
, The sheet 1, between the fold 3 and one end of the sheet, constitutes a game board 8, which is-preferably the ordinary checker or chess game board; this game board hav in but a single fold/1: centrally thereof;
e end section 9 of sheet'l constitutes a covering flap, and is provided with snap button members 10 adapted to engage corre ondin snap button members on the ban: of t e sheet 1 when the latter is in folbded position, as will be explained. I,
e 1 shows the game apparatus in positionfor play, and it will be. noted that when in such positionall of the game pieces are exposed and can be easily removed and replaced from their frames 5 and 6.
' When it is desired tofold the game apparatus, the game pieces 7 are located in their proper frames 5 and 6, and sheet 1 is folded first on the fold line 4, and then on the fold line 3 to bring the game board section of the sheet flat upon the frames 5 and 6 and cover the game pieces 7, as clearly shown in Figure 3. The flap 9 is then folded over and secured by its snap button members 10 so that the apparatus will have very much the appearance of a pocketbook or billfold, and will be relatively thin and occupy but small space in storage or shipment. 7 I
In Figures 4 and 5 I illustrate a modification in which I employ a separate game board 11, the backing sheet 12 corresponding to the sheet 1 of Figures 1, 2 and 3, con-' stituting solely a backing sheet and covering medium, and providing anupwardly projecting flange 13 extending above the rames 5 and 6, and providing ample space for the accommodation of the folded game board 11.
One end of the sheet 12 is folded over the game board as'shown at-14, and the other end of the sheet constitutes a covering flap 15 secured to the section 14 by snap button members 16, so that in outward appearance, this form of my game apparatus is similar to the form shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3, when folded. r
With this modification shown inFi ures 4 and 5, the folded game board constitutes a direct cover for the game pieces 7, and serves to hold them in their frames when the apparatus is folded.
The modification shown in Figures 6 and 7 embodies the same idea of a separate folded game board 11, such as disblosed'in Figures 4 and 5, but the covering and backingsheet 15 is differently formed in that it extends around .-one edge of the frames 5 and 6, as shown at16, and the other end of the coverin sheet entirely incloses the gameboard an pieces, and'has a relatively thin flange or tongue17 secured to the section 16 by sna buttons 18.
In the mo ifica'tion shown in Figures 8 and 9, the same idea of a separate folded ame board 11 is carried out, but in this orm of game apparatus the frames 5 and 6 are secured within a box like container 19 and a flan ed cover 20' incloses the same. j In all-of t e forms shown in Figures 4, 5; (f, 7; and 8, 9, the idea of an'upwardly pro eeting flange extending above the frames 5 and 6 to provide-a space for the foldin game board 11* is utilized.
In lgures 10, 11 and 12 I illustrate another form of my invention in which I provide a sin 1e frame 21 accommodating thirty gamepieoes'f, the game pieces being arrangedin three rows of ten game ieces each, with the respective sets at the di erent ends of the frame.
Covering flaps 22 and 23 are adapted to.
be folded over the frame and inclose the game board 11.
In Figures 13 and 14, I illustrate another modification in which a single frame 21 is employed, but a partition strip 24 is secured in notches 25 in the sides of the frame and separates the frame into two compartments for the game pieces 7 of the different sets.
This form of single frame may be preferred over the double frame idea and I do not wish to be limited to the exact manner of constructing, shaping or forming the frame, but desire to cover broadly the idea of a frame for accommodating the game pieces in sets, either with or without a partition and in combination with a gameboard described without departing fromv my in-- vention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall withinvthe spirit I and scope of the appended claims.
