Description
A. L. s T|MsuN.v Nail-Extractors.-
No.154,926. Patented sept. 8,1874.
UNITED STATES PATENT QEFICE.-
ALEXANDER L. STIMSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN vNAIL-EXTRACTORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,926, dated September 8, 1874; application filed l August 15, 1874. 1
To all whom 'it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER L. STIM- sON, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain Improvements' in Nail-Extractors, of which the following is a specification: v Y
My invention consists in a bar having a split or forked end of peculiar form, adaptedV for extracting nails with ease and certainty,
and without injury to the surface of the wood.`
Vthe wood, and so7 also, that they may be used more effectively in prying the nails out. The ends or points of the arms 'are rounded or beveled off on theA outer side, as shown at c, Figs. l, 2, and 3, and also rounded offon the under outer edges, as shown at d, Fig. 4.
The upper face of the arms may be curved slightly lengthwise, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2; or they may be made straight and flat, as preferred. I
In using the tool, its points are inserted under the -sides or edges 'of the nail-head, and then the tool driven forward by a hammer Wynn astride of the nail, which is drawn from the wood by the inclined wedge-like arms passing under and lifting the head. V
When the nail does not hold tightly in the wood, it may be quickly drawn by engaging the points of the arms under its head, and then depressing the rear end of the body A, so as t0 throw the arms up.
By constructing the tool with the two tapering arms, and making their ends of the form shown, I am enabled to take a quick and rm hold of nails having their heads embedded in the wood,.and to draw the nails easily and with little injury or defacement of the surface of the wood.
I am aware that curved and notched claws have long been used for drawing tacks and nails; but they are not provided with tapering or wedge-like .arms to slide under and lift the head of the nail.
In making my tool it is not necessary to round oii` the points c d, but it is considered desirable as the arms will then engage under the nail-head more easily.
Having described myinvention, whatI claim y The nail-extractor, consisting of the bar A, having the parallel wedge-shaped arms b, substantially as shown and described.
ALEXR. L. STIMSON.
