' ANNULAB- snu'rrnn Application filed Kay 14, 1928 Eerlal No. 333,201.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK'H. Gnovn, a
citizen of the United States residing at Columbiana, in the county of (lolumblana and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Annular Shuttles, of which t e following is aspecification.
This invention relates to improvemcntsin annular shuttles such as are used upon the class of machines designed to spirally wras a narrow strip of paper or the like aroun an annulus, such as a tire casing, and has for its objects to im rove the mechanism u on the shuttle inclu ing the folder device w ich folds the edge of the paper, and to provide an adjustable ide roller which guides the folded paper trated in the accompanying drawings, in.
which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a shuttle embodying the invention, showing the same in the operative position, a tire casing being shown in cross section therein;
Fig. 2, an edge elevation of the same;
Fig. 3, an enlarged elevation of the folder device;
Fig. 4, a section on the line H, Fig. 3; gig. 5, a section on the line 5-5, Fig. 1; an
Fig. 6, an end elevation of the feed roll.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the drawings.
The annular shuttle is indicated generally at 1 and is provided with a gate 2 hinged as at 3 in one side of the gap 4 formed in the shuttle and provided with a latch 5 at its swinging end, for normally holding the gate in closed position to form a continuous annulus.
A pin 6 is carried by the latch bar and arranged to be grasped in the hand of the operator together with the pin 7, which is fixed in the gate, for the purpose of easily om thefolder de-' vice to the annulus to be wrapped.
unlocking the latch barwhen it is desired to open the gate.
The paper tape 8 which is used to wrap around the tire 901' other annulus, is carried in a stock roll 10 which is woundupon a spool 11. which is journaled upon the spinf 'dle 12-carried by the shuttle.
The a r tape as it passes from the spec is caf'riad iiver a pin 13 and into the paper folder which includes the casting 14 con- 455 nected to the shuttle hy the bolts 15 which also serve to'attach the-plate 16 to the outer end of the casting.
A pair of conical rollers 17 and 18 are journaled upon the late as at 19 and 20 to respectively, said ro are being preferably mounted upon centers diagona to the methan line 0 the plate as shown. The roller 17 is provided with-a peripheral flange 21 and t e roller 18, has a similar flange 22 It preferably of greater thickness than the flan 21.
The paper tape 8 is carried over the folder on late 23, one edge thereof being extended tween the rollers 17 and 18 and carried under the inclined edge of the late as, shown at 26, folding this edge of t e paper upon itself, a on As the folded paper tape emerges from the paper folder, it asses over the guide roll 27 and thence to t e' tire or other annulus to be wrapped. The guide roll 27 is journaled upon a s indle 28, the lower end of which as is provi ed with a head 29, pivoted upon the pin 30 which is carried by the lugh 31 provided with a threaded shank 32 w ich extends through the shuttle, a nut 33 attaching the same to the shuttle. me
A pair of oppositely disposed arms 34L are fixed upon the head 29 of the spindle and are engaged by the adjusting screws 35 which are threaded through the side face of the shuttle 2 and provided with jamh nuts 36 for holding the adjusting screws in position.
' The outer end of the sprindle 28 may he provided with the reduced, threaded shank 37 upon which the jambnuts 38 are mounted, these" jamb nuts being preferably cirno cular and located within the socket 39 formed in the end of the roller 27.
This spindle ma thus be adjusted to hold the roller at any desired angle necessary in order to properly guide the paper tape to the tire, permitting difl'erent sizes of tires to be easily wrapped and also permitting the spiral windings of the paper tape to be placed in any desired spaced relation, without causing the paper tape to buckle or wrinkle, as the spindle of the guide roller may be ad usted to the proper'angle to properly feed the paper tape to the annulus to be wrapped therewith.
An annular shuttle having a stock roll of wrapping material, a ide roll over which the wrapping materia is passed, a pivoted shaft upon which the guide roll is mounted,
an arm extending from' each side of the 20 shaft and adjusting screws for engagement with said arm to hold the roll in any desired angular adjustment.
