Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NATHAN F. REED AND THOMAS O. ANDRUS, 011 NORTH WALOOTT, VT.
IMPROVEMENT IN RElN-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,906, dated September 8,1874; application filed August 4, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, NATHAN F. REED and THoMAs O. ANDRUS, of North Walcott, in the county of Lamoille and in the'State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rein-Holders; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
Our invention is intended as an improvement upon the rein-holder for which Letters Patent N 0. 150,081 were granted to us April 21, 1874.; and the nature of our invention consists in combining with the cams an elastic cord in lieu of the weight and cord used in our 'for-' mer case, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a rear elevation of the reinholder embodying our present invention, and Fig. 2 is an end view of the same.
A represents the clamp, with fasteningscrew B and vertical post 0. b is the rod passing through the upper end of the post 0, and upon which the cams D D are hung. These parts are all constructed substantially in the same manner as described in our former patent above referred to. The inner ends of the cams D D are connected by means of an elastic cord, at, which passes around the clampscrew B, to hold the cams down to the reins.
In our former patent we employed a cord with a weight for the same purpose. This we found objectionable for many reasons. It was expensive, and the weight would move about considerably and vibrate in all directions, thereby injuring the dash-board.
By the employment of the elastic cord a, the clamps are held down equally as well, if not better, than with the weight, and without the inconveniences attending the Weight.
As the elastic cord becomes stretched, the slack can readily be taken up by winding it once or more around the screw B. The tension of this cord is also adjusted in the same manner, so that the cams are adjusted to hold reins of diiferent thicknesses.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new; and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with the cams D D and screw B, the adjustable elastic cord a, as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands this 23d day of July, 1874. r A
NATHAN F. REED. THOMAS O. ANDRUS.
