ADJUSTABLE HAIR FOUNDATION.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CrrAUNonY A. BEN- NETT, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Adjustable Hair Foundation, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in devices known as hair foundations which are used in dressing the hair, and consists essentially of a single wire bent to form an approximately elliptical base, and a crown rising from the ends of and extending over the space enclosed by such base, and comprising two loops or looped portions, all as hereinafter set forth.

The primary object of my invention is to produce a comparatively simple and inexpensive hair-supporting foundation, which is efficient in application, capable of pro viding .for ventilation of the hair, and has a base which is adapted to be extended or expanded laterally and contracted longitudinally to whatever extent may be desired, or may be contracted laterally and expanded longitudinally, and a crown which is elevated or depressed in its middle portion, accordingly as said base is contracted or expanded longitudinally.

Another object is to provide an adjustable hair foundation, of the character described, which is applicable to a head of practically any size, and can be used on such head most advantageously to support the hair when drawn over or through or both over and through the same in practically any shape desired, such as a roll or pufi of any reasonable size and usual shape.

This formation enables the hair to be so arranged and dressed that the apparent volume or amount of the same is increased in a very perceptible manner.

The device is light in weight, but, nevertheless, strong and'durable, and it can be readily manufactured.

Other objects and advantages will appear in the course of the following description.

tion of said foundation, and, Fig. 3, a top plan of the same when bent or stretched out of its normal shape or out of the shape shown in the preceding views.

Similar reference characters designate similar parts throughout the several views.

The device consists of a base 1 and a crown comprising two loops 2 which extend upwardly from the ends of said base and meet above the center thereof.

In constructing this device, a ductile wire, the ends of which appear at 33, is first bent to produce the base 1 with arcuate sides and ends which are somewhat acute or sharp, then the wire from opposite sides is bent and twisted together, as at 4:, and carried upwardly and over to a point above the center of said base, in ellipse-forming arcs generally similar to, but, of course, much smaller than, the base arcs, where the wire from these arcs is again twisted together, as at 5, and from this point carried over and downwardly to the opposite end of the base, forming on the way two other small arcs similar to the first two, and finally said wire from the lastly formed arcs is twisted together, as at 6, and Wound around the contiguous end of the base, as at 7. The ends 3 are left after the wire has been wound at 7. Those portions of the wire which are above the plane of the base 1 form the loops 2 which with their connections comprise the crown of the foundation, as previously observed. These loops are connected with each other at adjacent ends by the twisted parts 5, and at their outer ends they are connected with the ends of the base 1 at 4 and 7. The end of the base 1 where the wire ends 3 are located consists of a continuous length of wire, and the o posite end of said base is made up of t e bent and twisted parts at 4.

The three units of this foundation, namely, the base 1 and the crown loops 2, being constructed and connected in the manner described above, it is plainly to be seen that said loops offer no obstruction or impediment to the distention or pulling apart of the sides of said base, consequently the latter can be stretched laterally and contracted longitudinally to a considerable extent, or to practically any reasonable extent, and at the same time the loops are thrust inwardly at their meeting ends, but they are not materially changed in width. On the other hand, the base may be elongated and the crown correspondingly depressed. The device is, therefore, susceptible of being changed in shape to a considerable and diversified extent.

In practice, the foundation is applied crosswise, approximately upright, or otherwise on the top of the head at the back, and the hair is placed over or drawn through, or both, and arranged on, in and about the same in the manner well understood by those skilled in the art. By the simple act of drawing apart or pressing toward each other the sides of the base 1, the foundation is shortened or lengthened, and made wider or, narrower, accordingly, and the height of the same is correspondingly increased or decreased, hence the range of application of said foundation is wide, the variety of results which it is possible to obtain withit is wide, and the utility of the device is correspondingly enhanced.

A covered wire is preferably employed in the manufacture of the foundation.

Some modification in the size, shape, construction, and arrangement of the parts of this device may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or exceeding the scope of what is claimed. In this connection it is especially important to note that more than one piece of wire might be employed in the production of my foundation. i

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. As an improved article of manufacture, an adjustable hair foundation comprising an approximately elliptical base, and a crown comprising two loops which have their adjacent ends joined above the center of said base and their outer ends joined to the ends of said base, all being made out of a single piece of wire.

prising an approximately elliptical base, and approximately elliptical crown-forming loops, all made of a single piece of wire which is bent to form one base end, twisted together to form the other base end, carried therefrom upwardly and over the plane of said base and twisted together abovethe center of said base, to form one of said loops, carried therefrom over and down to the opposite or first-named end of said base and twisted together to form the other of said loops, and having its ends wound around said first-named end of the base.
