Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,778, dated September 8, 1874; application filed /s August 6', 1874.-

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that we, NATHAN B. ABBOTT and JOHN P. ORANFORD, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Pavements for Streets, of which the' following is a specification: 1

Wooden pavements of various characters have been laid, and they are approved 5 but, in consequence of the quality of the wood, or the atmospheric influences, such pavements' in many places speedily rot and Wear away, and many expensive pavements are lled with holes, and cannot be repaired except at great expense.

Our invention is made for the purpose of protecting wooden pavements, and of repairing and protecting wooden pavements that are more or less injured. 1

In order to repair wooden pavement that is more or less injured by wear, the surface is thoroughly swept, and the loose particles of wood removed. The surface is then coated with bitumen, preferably in a heated state, and we then fill into the holes a bituminous concrete made of a mixture of sand, ashes, gravel, and bituminous material, preferably in a heated state, care being taken to lay the same when the wood is dry. The proportions of such materials may be similar to those heretofore made use of, or preferably those set forth in the patent of N. B. Abbot, No. 112,7 64, granted March 21, 1871.

The material is to be thoroughly rolled with the object of rendering the material compact, iilling up the holes level, and of pressing the gravel and the bituminous material into the surface of the wood.

If the wooden pavement is in good condition, the surface is coated with a layer of bitumen, or the Wood and bituminous materials are coated after the holes have been filled up and rolled level. For this purpose a layer of bituminous material is next laid, in preferably a hot condition, and clean sand or ne gravel is spread upo'n the same while hot, and then rolled, and according to the condition of the are filled with the bituminous concrete at b,f and rolled to form a hard smooth surface, as

aforesaid; then the hot bituminous mixture is applied, together with sand or gravel, as at c, and then a second and third layer are applied, if required, as at ef.

We do not claim a bituminous material for the repair of Wooden pavements, as the same` has been laid between, and upon, slats of wood nailed to such wooden pavement, for the purpose of retaining the bituminous material.

We are enabled to attach the bituminous mixture directly' to the wood by ilowing over the surface the bituminous coating previous to applying the layer of the bituminous mixture, as set forth.

We claim as our invention- The wooden pavement coated with bituminous material applied directly to its surface, and then covered by a layer of bituminous concrete and rolled, as specified.
