Description

. UNITED STATES s'rnrn m a. rear, or on: ranx, minors.
ATENT or fice...
noorme MATERIAL.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, STEPHEN "G. WRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oak Park, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Roofing Material, of which the following is a specification. p
My invention relates, more particularly, to improvement in prepared roofing of the Variety involving the use of a sheet of felt or other fibrous material forming the body of the-roofing, saturated and coated with bitumen, coal-tar, or any other suitable or ganic or mineralwax; and my, object, generally stated, is to provide such sheets of roofing with a surface-layer of wear-resisting material formed of particles partially embedded-in the coating thereon and of such material as to permit of the production of roofing of a wide range of durable colors and shades, which shall be permanent or lasting notwithstandin wear of the layer.
The accompanying rawing shows, by a view in perspective, a sheet of roofing material constructed in accordance with my invention. I
In the manufacture of my improved roofing I employ; preferably, a sheet 2 of felt, or other fibrous material and treat it to a hot bath of bitumen, coal-tar, or any other suitable organic or mineral wax, as is common practice, to impregnate the fibrous sheet and produce on the upper surface thereofa coating of such substance, as represented at 3. I then spread upon the coating 3', while it is hot, a layer ofparticles 4 and partially embed the same therein in any suitable manner, as by passing the sheets, thus coated, between rollers.
In carrying out my invention, I use for the surface coating, formed of the particles 4, masses of baked earthy materials, such as those materials of which brick, tile, pottery and the like are formed, reduced, as by crushing, to preferably about 10.to 12 mesh, though the sizes of the particles 4 may vary, according to desire, fromthat stated. These particles thus become partially embedded in the coating 3, and are sufiiciently close together to cause the exposed surface of the roofing to present the color of the particles 4 as a substantiall unbroken surface as to color. The partic es of baked earthy ma terials, such as those herein enumerated, are of a porous nature, and form a preservative coating over the bitumen, coal-tar, or other Specification Letters Patent, it

By employing the particular material compo'sedof the particles'4, as stated, for the surface coating of the roofing not. only may a wide range of colored roofings be provided by mixm certain of the earthy materials together in different proportions and mixing other ingredients with such earthy materials, as well as varying the time during which they are exposed to the heat in the baking operation as is well understood in the arts relating to the manufacture of brick, tile, pottery and the like, but different shades of colors may be produced and surface-coatings for the roofing having not only uniform, but lastingly uniform, color may be provided.
In the use of the materials enumerated possible not only to produce roofing having colors, but also to produce such coatin of mottled or variegated coloring. Furt ermore, by constructing roofing in accordance with my invention, not only may the exposed surface of the roofing pres'ent different or blending colors, and shades of color, but the surface-coatings thereof, by reason of the materials of which the particles 4 are formed, retain their original color indefi-. nitely, as each particle is of homogeneous color-throughout, and, the wearing away of ments has no effect in'the way of impairing the preservation of the color originally presente d by the roofing. Another advantage preferred form, for the surface coating of the roofing isthat of durability, in that such material, when crushed, presents not only an irregular fracture, but a roughened surface due to its porosity, and thus a tenacious bond between the particles 4 and the coating 3 is produced when these particles are embedded ther'ein.
'What I claimas new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As a new article of manufacture, roofing composed of sheet water-proof material having its surface composed of comparateri'aljof predetermined coloring whereby a a protecting coating of a wide range of these particles under the action of the ele-' .tively coarse particles of baked earthy ma surface of predetermined coloring and prepared in the manner stated it is due to the use of the material stated, in its roofing surface is produced presenting a coloring ermanent under wear, for the purpose set orth.
2. As a new article of manufacture, roof-- ing'composed of sheet water-proof material 5 having its'surface composed of particles of baked earth .material of predetermined coloring, said particles being partially embedded in a waterproofingcoating and extending above the plane thereof, whereby a roofing surface is produced presenting a [0 coloring ermanent under wear, for the purpose set orth.
