A. W. CANNEY GLARE ELIMINATOR Filed June 28, 1924 Almazz Cazzzzey I'NVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented July 21, 1925.
ALMO N W. CANNEY, 0F WOLFEIBORO, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
GLARE ELIMINATOR.
Application filed June as, 1924. Serial No. 723,006.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ALMON W. OANNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVolfeboro, in the county of Carroll and State of New Hampshire, have invented new and useful Improvements in Glare Eliminators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to glare eliminators for automobile headlights.
The principal object of the invention is the provision of a device which may be applied to'the headlight of a motoryehicle and supported thereon by the electric bulb, so that the entire reflecting surface of the reflector is rendered incapable of performing its usual function.
Another object of the invention is to provide a glare eliminator which is constructed of a single piece of translucent'material colored green, which may be flexed and held so as to conform to the relative shape of the reflector of a headlight.
A further object of the invention is to construct a device of the class mentioned, which is simple in construction, cheap of manufacture and which may be constructed of various sizes for different size headlights.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention resides in certain novel construction and combination and arrangement of parts, the essential features of which are hereinafter fully described, are particularly pointed out in the appended claims, and are illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of my invention prior to the flexing of the same.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the same ready for use.
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view through a headlight with my invention applied thereto.
Rcferring more particularly to the drawing, the reference numeral 10 designates my invention in its entirety, and which is constructed of a single piece of stiff flexible material such as celluloid or the like and which material is colored green or other shade so as to reduce the glare, but yet reflects sufficient light upon the roadway forward of the headlight.
In Figure 1, the device is shown as in a flat conditioned and comprises a circular body 11 having a portion cut-away as at 12 to provide spaced end portions 13 and 14:.
The center of the device is formed with a concentric opening 15, and beyond the openmg 15, the body is cut-away semi-crescent shaped on opposite sides of the center as at 16, the said cut-away portion 16 opening into the cut-away portion 12. The material between the opening 15 and the cut-away portion 16 serves to provide a rear wall 17. The end portion 13 adjacent the edge thereof is provided with headed studs 18, and the end portlon 14 adjacent its edge is formed with openings 19 for receiving the heads of the studs when the device is in use. It will be noted that the openings 19 are slightly smallerin diameter than the heads of the studs 18, but the walls of the openings will spread as the studs are inserted.
When it is desired to apply the device to the headlight 20 as shown in Figure 3 of the drawing, the end portions 13 and 14 are brought into overlapping engagement with each other, which causes the device to assume a frusto-conical shape in cross sec tion. The studs 18 are then inserted in the openlngs 19 so that the end portions are locked to hold the device in this shape. It will be seen that the edges of the body portion which are cut-away as at 16 conform to the curvature of the rear wall 17. When applying the device to the headlight, the electric light bulb 21 is removed and then replaced by passing the threaded portion of the bulb through the opening 15 and then screwing the same in to its socket. It will therefore be seen that by reason of the shape of the device, the same will adapt itself relatively to the shape of the reflector so as to cover the reflecting surface thereof.
WVhen not in use for shipping purposes, it will be manifest that the device may be placed in a flat condition as shown in Figure 1 of the drawing.
While I have described what I deem to be the most desirable embodiment of my invention, it is obvious that many of the details may be varied without in any way departing from the spirit of my invention, and I therefore do not limit myself to the exact details of construction herein set forth nor to anything less than the whole of m invention limited only by the appended claims.
What is claimed as new is A glare eliminator for automobile headlights comprising a single piece of flexible translucent material forming a body having the ends of the body portion together in spaced ends, semi-crescent shaped openings substantially conical shaped formation so cut in the body portion adjacent the center that the rear wall is arranged at an angle thereof, said semi-crescent shaped openings with respect to the remaining portion which 5 provided for forming-a substantially circuis adapted to entirely cover the reflecting 15 lar rear Wall provided with an opening surface of the headlight. adapted to register with the lamp socket of In testimony whereof I have afiixed my the headlight and to receive a lamp bulb signature.
* which is adapted to retain the eliminator 10 in operative position, means for fastening ALMON W. CANNEY.
