Description
P'. GoLnMANN.. Mask-Caps.
No.154j664, Patented Sept.1,1874.
UNITED STATES `LPHILIPP GOLDMAN N PATENT (DEEIGE 0E NEW YORK, N. Y.'
IMPROVEMENT .IN MASK-CAPS.
Speciication'formingpart of Letters Patent No. 154,664, dated September 1, 1874; application tiled July 3, 1874.
' To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, PHILIPP GOLDMANN, of
the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and Improved Mask- Cap, of which the following is a specification:
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l represents a front view of this cap v when the same is unfolded to be worn as a fold up around the band when the cap or hat is to be worn in the ordinary manner, and that can be unfolded and drawn down over the face and neck in storms and exposure vto severe cold. The invention consists in the combination with the masks or shields ot glass or other transparent eye-pieces, which are litted in the sockets made in the mask or shield for the purpose of vision, so as to protect-the eyes from the direct contact of the wind, and yet enable one to see objects without.
Ilhe sides of the mask or shield are perforated at points opposite the ears, for the purpose of facilitating the act of hearing when the mask is lowered. The invention also consists in forming the mask-cap from two pieces, counterparts of each other, the same being joined by a seam that extends through the center of the cap.
The letter A designates the mask-cap, the mask or shield proper being designated by the letter B. When folded up as shown in Fig. et the mask or shield is arranged in two folds outside ofthe band of the cap, the folds being so arranged that the eye-sockets, the nosepiece, and the aperture for the mouth are concealed from view. The letter C designates the sockets for the eyes. These sockets are bound around their edges to give them a 1inished shape and appearance, and to give thek means of securing therein the eye-pieces D, which consist of pieces of glass or transparent material surrounded by a binding, E, which enables me to attach and secure them in the sockets by sewing. The eye-pieces thus prepared and secured form convenient windows for the mask or shield, and protect the eyes of the wearer from the Weather, while they allow to him unobstructed vision.
The side perforations F will greatly aid the wearer in hearing when the lower part ot' the mask or shield fits closely agail'lst his person.
The mask'cap is V,made of two pieces, G G, which are counterparts of each other inshape and dimensions, and are united by a seam, H. A cross-seam, I, is produced at the top ot' the cap, extending partly across each division G, where gore-shaped pieces are cut out of the divisions G to bring the top of the cap to the proper shape. The nose J is formed in cutting out the pattern, a projection of the proper shape and size being made on each edge, so that when brought together they form the nose J, without requiring to be shaped afterward.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The eye-pieces D, consisting of glass or other transparent material, fitted around their edges with binding or its equivalent, and secured in the sockets C of the mask or shield substantially as described.
2. A mask-cap, made in two divisions, G G, counterparts of each other, and so as to form the nose J when afterward united, substantially as set forth. Y
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand this 30th day of ,J une, 1874.
PHILIPP GOLDMANN.
