SHOULDER PAD.

Application filed June 24, 1924. Serial No. 722,113.

To all whom it may concern:

' Be it known that l, LOUIS GoLoscnMm'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bloomsburg, in the county of Columbia and 8 State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoulder Pads; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The object of this invention is to distribute the load upon the shoulder of those accustomed to carry articles suspended from 1 or perched upon the shoulder as well as to prevent concentration of the pressure upon one or more prominent points tending to produce soreness and callous places.

-Other objects and advantages will be apparent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood.

While the drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different 5 conditions and requirements, various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention. so Referring to the accompanying drawings I forming a part of the application:

A pad constructed in accordance with the present invention comprises a frame 1, a filling 2 and a covering 3, the latter consisting of chamois, leather, fabric, or textile.

The frame 1 is of rectangular out I line and preferably consists of a stout wire bent into the required shape and for the sake of lightness aluminum is the preferred metals. The filler 2 consists of metal which in'the preferred form consists of aluminum, said metal" being fluted or corrugated and provided at opposite ends with strap extensions 4 which are bent about opposite members of the frame as indicated most clearly in Figures 3 and 4. The corrugations serve to stiffen and reinforce the filler as well as to provide passages for the circulation of air whereby to prevent heating and sweating of the shoulder. The covering 3 gives a finished effect and also serves in a measure to add to the cushioning effeet. The space at each end of the filler formed between the strap extensions 4 and the members of the frame to which said extensions are attached receive the shoulder strap 5 to which the article or load may be attached.

In the modification shown in Figure 6 both the frame and filler constitute part of a single wire of proper gage, the same being bent to provide the frame 1 and the filler 2 the latter consisting of return bends of the wire, which is bent back and forth. The filler 2 is spaced from opposite members of the frame 1 as indicated at 6 to provide openings to receive the shoulder strap, the frame and filler being enclosed within a suitable covering of the nature herein indicated.

What is claimed is 2- l. A shoulder pad comprising a frame, a filler having opposite portions spaced from the adjacent frame members and a covering enclosingthe frame and filler and havingportions cut away opposite the spaces between the frame and filler to receive the load carrying shoulder strap.

A shoulder pad comprising a frame, a filler carried by the frame and spaced at opposite ends therefrom to provide openings, said filler comprising elements arranged to present a ribbed or fluted surface, and a covering for the frame and filler having portions cut away opposite the spaces to provide openings for the load sustaining shoulder strap.
