To all whom it mayvmwwm' 7 Be it known that I, JOHN STnIonnw-ALD, a citizen of United States, residing at Fort iVayn -in the county of Allen and State of- Indiana, have invented'oer tain new and usei'ul Improvements in Ropeand Wire Hold: ers, of whichthe following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
The present invention relates to holders for ropes, wires, cables and the like, and aims tov provide a novel and improved' device'of that-kind to-be applied tothe dou- Jled portion ofthe'rope, wire or other flexible element near the-loop thereof, for holding the loop closed and preventing the portionsof the flexible element from slid ing relatively to one another.
It isalso an object of the invention to provide such: a device constructed from a single piece whichcan-be readily cast 'fIOHT suitable metal or; otherwise inexpensively manufactured without requiring machine work or other expensive manufacturing. process.
With the foregoing. and othen objects in view, which w-illbe apparentas the invention-is more fully understood, the'invention resides in the formation of the member constituting the holder in-a novel a-ndimproved manner to engage and hold the flexible element in an efie'ctivemannen it being understood that changes can be made within the scope of what is hereinafter claimed, without departing from the spirit of the inven tion.

The holder comprises a single part or member that may be cast, forged or otherwise formed from aluminum or any other suitable metal. Said member comprises the elongated body or bar 7 having the lug 8 projecting at an angle from one side at one end of said body, and said lug is formed with a notch 9 adjacent to the body 7 at that side ofthelug which faces the opposite end of tl 1e-body,so that the lug 8' forms a hook. Between the lug 8 andstud 10 the body has the outstanding. portion 1 1 projecting from the same side of the body as the-lug and stud, and said portion 11 is of tapered or wedge form in, plan; when loohing-at either edge of the body 'Z as seen in Figs. 2 and 3. The flange or wing 13 is of wedge-shaped cross section, and the groove 1% is also of wedge-shaped cross section, as seen in Fig. i. The device is used for holding or fastenlng together the portions of flexible element which have been doubled together, to form the loop 21 which surrounds a member 22. The flexible element may be a rope, cable, or the like, and may be electric conductors or wires looped around an insulator represented by the member 22, and it will be understood that the device can be used for various purposes for which it is suitable.
In applying the holder, reference being had to Fig. 5, the holder is disposed at an angle with the flexible element to extend across said element, and the holder is then moved transversely so as to position the portions 20 of the flexible element in the slot 12, with the body 7 at one side and the wing or flange 13 at the opposite side. Then, the holder is swung away from the object or member 22 in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 5, and this-will kink or bend the portions- 20 of the flexible element where they extend across the lug or hook 8 and the adjacent end of the portion 11, as seen in Fig. 1. The notch 9 will receive the portions 20, to hold them together, and said portions will also be received by the groove 14: in which they will be wedged together between the converging walls of said groove, as seen in Fig. 4. The wing or. flange 13 passes across the flexible element opposite to the body or bar 7. Before the body or bar 7 is swung to flnal position it is swung transversely to engage the pin or stud 10 across the portions 20 opposite to the portion 11. This is readily done by separating the flexible element and corresponding terminal of the body 7 to enable the stud or pin 10 to be engaged with the flexible element.
As shown in the drawings, the holder is applied to the portion 11 above the flexible element and the stud 10 below said element. Thus, as seen in Fig. 5, the holder is positioned with the lug 8 below and the portion. 11 above the flexible element. The holder is then swung toward the right, as seen in Fig. 5, to move the flange or wing 13 down across the side of the flexible element facing the observer, and the right hand end of the body 7 and flexible element are separated so that the stud or pin 10 can be engaged under the flexible element.
The portions 20 of the flexible element are frictionally held together between the flange or wing 13 and body 7, and within the notch 9, thereby'preventing said portions 20 from slipping or sliding longitu-,
dinally relatively to one another, and the loop 21 is also held closed. The portions 20 are also bent where they extend across the lug 8, the adjacent end of the portion 11 and the stud 10.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A holder of the character described comprising a member having a lug, a stud and a portion outstanding from'one side thereof with said portion between the lug and stud, with a slot between said lug and portion to receive a doubled flexible element, said portion having a substantially longitudinal groove of a width to receive the two portions of the flexible element side by side in contact with the opposite walls of the groove, said walls converging so that said portions of the flexible element wedge between said walls when said element is tightened, and said stud being engageable across the flexible element opposite to said portion.

A holder of the" character described comprising an elongated body having a lug and a stud outstanding from one side thereof at opposite ends of said body, and having a portion outstanding from'said side he tween said lug and stud, with a slot between said lug and portion to receive a doubled flexible element, said lug having a notch for the engagement of the two portions of said element disposed side by side, said portion having a flange and a longitudinal groove between said flange and body to receive said portions of the flexible element side by side in contact with the opposite walls of said groove, said walls converging so that said portions of the flexible element wedge between said walls when said element is tightened, and said stud being engageable across saidflexible element opposite to said portion.
